VAGUE EXPRESSIONS


 A menudo utilizamos palabras y expresiones que suenan menos directas o no muy exactas ni precisas.

Enumeramos algunas de ellas en el siguiente artículo.


1.- Cuando No Sabemos El Nombre De Algo

- What do you call it?

Tim has to have a test, what do you call it?

- Or something.

Look at that dog. It's a kind of poodle or something.

- Stuff

What kind of stuff do you use for painting?

- Thing

Fred, please bring me the thing to clean the windows.


2.- Para Sonar Menos Directo

- Sort of

There's sort of something I don't like about this place.

- Kind of

It's kind of expensive.

- Stuff

I have too much stuff to do.

- Thing

I forgot a lot of things yesterday.

- About

It's about eight o'clock.

- More or less

I've been working here for more or less 5 years.


3.- Para Nombrar Grupos o Categorías

- And things like that.

There are rings, earrings and things like that.

NOTA.- Otras expresiones de uso similar son:

- And that kind of thing.

- And stuff like that.

- And that type of thing.

- And that sort of thing.


4.- Vague Expressions Usados De Manera No Educada (Impolite)

En este caso se utilizan "Stuff", "Whatever", "Whenever", "Whoever" y "Whichever" de forma común.

- Dialog 1:

A: What did you do at school today?

B: Stuff!


- Dialog 2:

A: You spend too much time talking on the phone.

B: Whatever!
