VAGUE EXPRESSIONS


 A menudo utilizamos palabras y expresiones que suenan menos directas o no muy exactas ni precisas.

Enumeramos algunas de ellas en el siguiente artículo.


1.- Cuando No Sabemos El Nombre De Algo

- What do you call it?

Tim has to have a test, what do you call it?

- Or something.

Look at that dog. It's a kind of poodle or something.

- Stuff

What kind of stuff do you use for painting?

- Thing

Fred, please bring me the thing to clean the windows.


2.- Para Sonar Menos Directo

- Sort of

There's sort of something I don't like about this place.

- Kind of

It's kind of expensive.

- Stuff

I have too much stuff to do.

- Thing

I forgot a lot of things yesterday.

- About

It's about eight o'clock.

- More or less

I've been working here for more or less 5 years.


3.- Para Nombrar Grupos o Categorías

- And things like that.

There are rings, earrings and things like that.

NOTA.- Otras expresiones de uso similar son:

- And that kind of thing.

- And stuff like that.

- And that type of thing.

- And that sort of thing.


4.- Vague Expressions Usados De Manera No Educada (Impolite)

En este caso se utilizan "Stuff", "Whatever", "Whenever", "Whoever" y "Whichever" de forma común.

- Dialog 1:

A: What did you do at school today?

B: Stuff!


- Dialog 2:

A: You spend too much time talking on the phone.

B: Whatever!

ABOUT



Una palabra con más de un uso y más de un significado es el que nos ocupa en esta ocasión.

1.- About = Acerca de

Si miramos el diccionario, el significado básico de "about" como preposición es "acerca de (algo / alguien).

- What is it about? = ¿Acerca de qué es esto?

- I don't know anything about the crime.

- We are going to talk about wild animals.


2.- About = Alrededor, en

Como adverbio, "about" se podría traducir como "alrededor" o "en".

- The meeting is about 1. = La reunión es alrededor de la 1.

- I started teaching about 10 years ago. = Empecé a enseñar alrededor / hace unos / de 10 años.


3.- To Be About To

Se trata de una expresión que significa "estar a punto de (hacer / suceder algo)".

- I was about to call you. = Yo estaba a punto de llamarte.

- Love is about to change my heart. = El amor esta a punto de cambiar mi corazón.


4.- Palabras con About

Existen algunas palabras que suelen acompañar a "About".

- John was concerned about the climate change.

- Patty is very excited about the wedding.

- Don't worry about it.


5.- Recomendaciones

1.- Siempre buscar información acerca de las palabras en diccionarios.

2.- Buscar ejemplos de los diferentes usos de "About".

3.- Evitar traducir a no ser que sea estrictamente necesario.

THE TIME - Part 1

¿Cómo se dice la hora en inglés? ¿Qué va primero, horas o minutos? ¿Cuántas formas de decir la hora existen?
Son algunas de las preguntas más comunes que los estudiantes hacen con respecto a la hora.
En el siguiente artículo respondemos a ellas y planteamos las formas más efectivas y sencillas de decir la hora.

1.- Reloj



Observamos 5 palabras clave.
- O'clock = En punto
- To = Para
- Past = Pasado/as
- (A) Quarter = (Un) cuarto (15 minutos)
- Half = Media (30 minutos)

2.- What time is it?

Es la pregunta que debemos responder de la siguiente manera:

1º.- Colocamos el sujeto de la pregunta, "It", en primera posición.
2º.- Utilizamos el verbo auxiliar de la pregunta. En este caso "To Be".
3º.- Finalmente, decimos la hora en una de las formas detalladas en el siguiente apartado.

Ejemplo:

- What time is it? It is / It's one o'clock.

3.- Formas de decir la hora

a) Clásica.- Es la que aparece en los libros de aprendizaje del inglés. Para esto necesitamos seguir los siguientes pasos:

1º.- Decimos PRIMERO los minutos.
2º.- Utilizamos la palabra correspondiente al lado (To, Past) donde se encuentran los minutos.
3º.- Finalmente, decimos la hora que es (lado Past) o la que será (lado To).

Ejemplos:

- 8:10 = Ten past eight.
- 9:15 = (A) Quarter past nine.
- 10:30 = Half past ten (Half siempre va con Past)
- 12:40 = Twenty to one.
- 5:45 = (A) Quarter to six.

NOTA.- Sólo cuando la hora sea en punto, se utiliza O'clock. En este caso, al no haber minutos, sólo decimos la hora + o'clock.

- 9:00 = Nine o'clock
- 10:00 = Ten o'clock
- 12:00 = Twelve o'clock

b) Digital (moderna).- Para esta forma, tenemos que saber como mínimo los 60 primeros números. Aquí NO es necesario decir las palabras clave excepto O'clock cuando corresponda.

1º.- Decimos PRIMERO la hora.
2º.- Decimos los minutos tal como lo vemos.

Ejemplos:

- 8:10 = Eight (and) ten.
- 9:15 = Nine fifteen.
- 10:30 = Ten thirty.
- 12:40 = Twelve forty
- 5:45 = Five forty-five.

NOTA.- Cuando los minutos son menos de 10, se utiliza "o" en lugar de cero.

- 11:05 = Eleven o five. La "o" pronunciada como vocal "óu".

c) Otras

Una variante de "Past" es la palabra "After". Y de "To" es "Up"

- 6:20 = Twenty minutes after six.
- 8:50 = Ten minutes up nine.

Otra forma es utilizar la palabra "About" para decir "casi", "cerca de" o "a punto de". Esta palabra se utiliza cuando los minutos que tenemos son muy cercanos, pero no exactos en el momento.

- 3:45 = It's about fifteen minutes to/up four. = Son casi 15 minutos para las 4.

En algunos casos, se suelen agregar las expresiones "in the morning", "in the afternoon", al final.

- 2;10 = Ten past two in the afternoon.

4.- Utilizando otros tiempos verbales.

Como hemos visto en el apartado 2, la pregunta contiene como verbo auxiliar al verbo "To Be". En el pasado será:

- What time was it? It was one o'clock.

Para el futuro utilizamos comúnmente:

- What time will it be? It will be one o'clock.

5.- Recomendación

Es necesario saber las distintas variantes que aquí exponemos. Pero, también es necesario elegir la más adecuada de utilizar.
Nosotros recomendamos utilizar la forma del apartado 3, b), por ser la más sencilla.

III.- Fill in the gaps with "a", "an", "the", if necessary.

If you ask me about ___ hotels, I would recommend ___ Ritzor ___ Savoy, but if you are travelling on a tight budget ___ Thrif hotel in ___ Warwick Lane will do. IV.- Fill in each gap with one of these words:

Some words are used more than once. There are also some extra words that you won't need. You will also need to choose wether to use the article (the/_) when there is a choice.
