FIRE


Continuamos hablando de elementos. Esta vez con el Fuego.


1.- Fire - Pronunciación

La palabra suena de una forma u otra dependiendo del país. En UK suena algo así como "fá iá" y en USA, "fáier".


2.- Fire - Sustantivo

Algunos de sus equivalentes más comunes son: "fuego", "incendio" y "disparos".

- To light a fire = Encender un fuego.

- A fire broke out in the hospital. = Se declaró un incendio en el hospital.

- To return fire = Devolver disparos


3.- Fire - Verbo

Como verbo es "disparar" y "despedir".

- He fired into the crowd. = Él disparó a la multitud.

- You're fired! = ¡Estás despedido/a!


4.- Fire - Phrasal Verb

De los varios Phrasal Verbs que existen con "fire", destacan 2:

a) Fire away = Disparar (en el sentido de dar o lanzar algo)

Ejemplo:

- If you´ve got questions, fire away! = Si tienes preguntas, ¡dispara!

b) Fire something up = Encender

Ejemplo:

- Fire up the grill! = ¡Enciende la parrilla!


5.- Fire - Más vocabulario

- Be/come under fire = Ser objeto de severas críticas.

- Fire and Brimstone = La ira de Dios

- Go through fire and water = Aguantar carros y carretas

- To be on fire = Estar ardiente o en llamas

- Play with fire = Jugar con fuego

ADVANCED TEST 3

1.- The following text is a commentary from a journalist who is giving a live report of fire.
Complete the text with the correct form of the verbs in brackets. Sometimes you will also need to include a modal verb.

"This is KWTO and I'm Chris Kendall reporting from Sheldon Road just half a mile away from our radio station. This ___ (be) a dramatic scene. There ___ (be) flames everywhere. Airport Nightmare

VOCABULARIO BÁSICO LABORAL

En ésta nueva entrega, nos ocupamos del vocabulario básico que todos deberíamos conocer en el mundo laboral. Además de vocabulario, también hay algunas expresiones y verbos utilizados en el ámbito laboral.

1.- PROFESSIONS AND OCCUPATIONS

- Police(man/woman) = Policía (hombre/mujer)
- Doctor = Doctor
- Waiter / Waitress = Camarero / Camarera
- Nurse = Enfermer@
- Carpenter = Carpintero
- Dentist = Dentista
- Engineer = Ingeniero

Algunos se forman juntando el NOUN.

- Post = Postal (N)
- Postman / Postwoman = Cartero / Cartera

- Fire = Fuego (N)
- Fireman /Firewoman = Bomber@ (UK)
- Firefighter = Bomber@ (USA)

Otros derivan del VERB.

- Paint = Pintar
- Painter = Pintor

- Teach = Enseñar
- Teacher = Profesor(a)

- Plumb = Sondear
- Plumber = Fontanero

Otro :

- Bakery = Panadería
- Baker = Panader@

2.- GROUPS

Existen palabras genéricas que se utilizan para nombrar a las personas que trabajan en una empresa. Ellos son :

- Clerk = Emplead@, obrer@, dependiente(a)
- Employee = Empleado
- Co-worker / Workmate / Colleague = Compañer@ de trabajo

3.- ABOUT JOB

Aqui, algunos términos relacionados con el trabajo.

- Job = Trabajo
- Profession = Profesión
- Occupation = Ocupación
- Self-employed = Autónomo
- Full-Time Job = Trabajo a tiempo/jornada completa
- Part-Time Job = Trabajo a media jornada
- Apprentice = Aprendiz
- Boss = Jefe
- Salary = Salario, sueldo
- Minimum wage = Salario mínimo

4.- TO APPLY FOR A JOB

Al solicitar un trabajo, nos encontraremos con las siguientes palabras :

- Applicant = Solicitante
- Application form = Solicitud o formulario
- Employment Agency = Agencia de empleo
- Introductory letter = Carta de presentación
- Letter of reference = Carta de recomendación
- Qualifications = Títulos, certificados y similares
- References = Referencias
- Vacancy = Puesto vacante
- Interview = Entrevista
- Interviewer = Entrevistador
- Employer = Empleador (persona o empresa contratante)

5.- VERBS

Finalmente, algunos verbos y expresiones para entender y utilizar.

- To apply for a job = Solicitar un trabajo
- To hire = Contratar
- To fire = Despedir
- To quit a job = Dejar o abandonar un trabajo
- To resign = Renunciar, dimitir
- To be unemployed = Estar desempleado o sin trabajo
- To earn = Ganar (dinero)
- To work = Trabajar
