LAST

En esta ocasión, una palabra de la cual pocos conocen sus múltiples usos y significados.

1.- Last (Adjetivo)

En este uso equivale a "último(s)/última(s)", "final(es)".

Ejemplos:

- For the last time = Por última vez.

- The Last Judgement = El Juicio Final

2.- (The) last (Sustantivo)

Su significado aquí es "el/la/los/las último(s)/última(s)".

Ejemplos:

- He was the last to leave. Él fue el último en marcharse.

- I drank the last of the wine. = Me bebí lo último que quedaba del vino.

3.- Last (Adverbio)

En este caso se puede traducir como "En último lugar" o "por fin".

Ejemplos:

- Jim arrived last of all. = Jim llegó en último lugar.

- At last = Por fin

4.- Last (Verbo)

Como acción, equivale a "durar".

Ejemplos:

- The war lasted 3 years. = La guerra duró 3 años.

- The film lasts 90 minutes. = La película dura 90 minutos.

5.- Last (More Expressions)

- Last night = Anoche

- Last month = El mes pasado

- At the last minute = El último momento.

- (To) have the last laugh. = Reírse el último.

- The last gap = El último esfuerzo

- The last word = La última palabra

ÚLTIMO/A

1.- Last

Se usa de cuatro formas distintas: como sustantivo (the last), adjetivo, adverbio y verbo (= Durar).

Ejemplos:

- I was the last to leave. = Fui el/la último/a en salir. (Sustantivo)

- Last night = Anoche (Adjetivo)

- He arrived last of all. = Él llegó último. (Adverbio)

- The war lasted 3 years. = La guerra duró 3 años. (Verbo)

2.- Latest

Se refiere al último como el/lo/la "más reciente".

Ejemplos:

- It's my latest novel. = Es mi novela más reciente. (Adjetivo)

- Have you heard the latest? = ¿Has escuchado lo último/más reciente? (Sustantivo)

3.- Final

Se utiliza para finales de sucesos o eventos. También para el resultado de un proceso.

Ejemplos:

- I'm not coming, and that's final! = ¡No voy y punto! (Adjetivo)

- Finals = Los exámenes finales (Sustantivo)

4.- Ultimate

Como adjetivo se refiere al resultado de un largo proceso. Como sustantivo, es lo mejor, peor, más importante, etc; es decir, exagera algo.

Ejemplos:

- The ultimate aim. = El objetivo final. (Adjetivo)

- The últimate in something. = Lo último en algo. (Sustantivo)

5.- End

Como sustantivo, es el punto final de algo. Como verbo, su significado es acabar, terminar.

Ejemplos:

- It´s the end of the road. = Es el final del camino. (Sustantivo)

- End in tears = Acabar mal. (Verbo)

1.- History

El músico y compositor Jeff Lynne fue uno de los miembros de un super grupo formado a finales de los 80's llamado Traveling Wilburys. Pero, antes de ello, también fue uno de los responsables de la creación del grupo británico Electric Light Orchestra. Como su nombre lo dice, fue un grupo de Rock orquestal. También conocido por las siglas E.L.O., este grupo formado en 1970 cuenta con grandes canciones como "Evil Woman", "Livin' Thing", "Telephone Line", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Hold On Tight" y "Rock 'N' Roll Is King". E.L.O. también participó en la banda sonora original del film "Xanadu" junto a la cantante y actriz Olivia Newton John.
