ABOUT



Una palabra con más de un uso y más de un significado es el que nos ocupa en esta ocasión.

1.- About = Acerca de

Si miramos el diccionario, el significado básico de "about" como preposición es "acerca de (algo / alguien).

- What is it about? = ¿Acerca de qué es esto?

- I don't know anything about the crime.

- We are going to talk about wild animals.


2.- About = Alrededor, en

Como adverbio, "about" se podría traducir como "alrededor" o "en".

- The meeting is about 1. = La reunión es alrededor de la 1.

- I started teaching about 10 years ago. = Empecé a enseñar alrededor / hace unos / de 10 años.


3.- To Be About To

Se trata de una expresión que significa "estar a punto de (hacer / suceder algo)".

- I was about to call you. = Yo estaba a punto de llamarte.

- Love is about to change my heart. = El amor esta a punto de cambiar mi corazón.


4.- Palabras con About

Existen algunas palabras que suelen acompañar a "About".

- John was concerned about the climate change.

- Patty is very excited about the wedding.

- Don't worry about it.


5.- Recomendaciones

1.- Siempre buscar información acerca de las palabras en diccionarios.

2.- Buscar ejemplos de los diferentes usos de "About".

3.- Evitar traducir a no ser que sea estrictamente necesario.

Some words are used more than once. There are also some extra words that you won't need. You will also need to choose wether to use the article (the/_) when there is a choice.

PHRASAL VERBS

Los "Phrasal Verbs" son aquellos verbos que tienen como acompañante, un adverbio, una preposición o los dos elementos. Aunque no lo parezca, son más utilizados en la forma hablada que en la escrita.
Aquí una pequeña lista :

I.- PHRASAL VERBS

1.- Break up = Romper en trozos pequeños

2.- Bring on = Suceder algo malo

3.- Bring up = Referirse o mencionar algo

4.- Call off = Cancelar, dar por terminado un evento

5.- Call back = Devolver una llamada

6.- Calm down = Calmar(se)

7.- Catch up = Alcanzar, dar alcance a algo o a alguien

8.- Carry on = Continuar

9.- Come about = Suceder (algo), pasar (algo)

10.- Come across = Encontrar (algo / alguien) inesperadamente

11.- Come back = Volver, regresar

12.- Come in = Ingresar a algún lugar

13.- Cut off = Cortar

14.- Figure out = Entender, comprender algo

15.- Find out = Averiguar

16.- Get back = Volver

17.- Get up = Levantar(se)

18.- Give up = Rendir(se), abandonar

19.- Go on = Continuar

20.- Go out = Salir con amigos o en una cita

21.- Hold on = Esperar (usualmente en una llamada telefónica)

22.- Keep off = Abstener(se) de/ evitar hacer algo

23.- Keep up = Mantener, continuar (en sentido positivo)

24.- Let down = Causar decepción, decepcionar

25.- Look after = Cuidar de algo o alguien

26.- Look for = Buscar

27.- Look forward to = Esperar buenas noticias

28.- Make up = Maquillar(se)

29.- Make up one's mind = Decidir(se)

30.- Pass away = Morir(se)

31.- Put on = Poner(se), colocar(se) algo

32.- Put up with = Soportar, aguantar, sufrir

33.- Run away = Escapar(se), huir

34.- Run out of = Carecer, haberse quedado sin algo

35.- Stand by = Contar con alguien

36.- Set up = Establecer

37.- Take off = Despegar (vehículo aéreo)

38.- Take over = Reemplazar

39.- Try on = Probar(se) ropa

40.- Turn out = Resultar

41.- Turn on = Encender

42.- Turn off = Apagar

43.- Turn down = Rechazar, rehusar

44.- Wake up = Despertar(se)

45.- Warm up = Calentar, prepararse para algo

46.- Wear out = Gastar, desgastar

47.- Work out = Preparar un programa (calendario)

II.- CASO "TO BE"

Con el verbo "To Be", encontramos las siguientes formas :

1.- Be around = Estar alrededor

2.- Be at (something) = Estar haciendo algo en concreto

3.- Be back = Regresar, estar de vuelta / regreso

4.- Be out = Estar fuera de algo (evento, situación) o de algún lugar

5.- Be over = Acabar(se)

6.- Be up = Acabarse el tiempo

III.- OTROS

1.- (Could) do with = Bastar con (algo), ser (alguna cosa) suficiente. Poder con algo

2.- Shut up! = ¡Silencio!, ¡cállese! (exclamación)

3.- Hands up! = ¡Manos arriba!

4.- Lights out! = ¡Luces fuera!, ¡Apagar las luces!

IV.- UP, DOWN, ON, OUT

Estas son las preposiciones más comunes que acompañan a los "Phrasal verbs". Los entenderemos mejor si nos guiamos por sus significados.

1) Up .- A menudo significa el completar una acción o el lograr un objetivo.

2) Down .- Usualmente se utiliza para definir la reducción de algo.

3) On .- En muchos verbos, su significado es de continuidad.

4) Out .- Si buscamos su significado en el diccionario, encontraremos "sin" y "fuera". Por ello, al aplicarlo con el verbo, indica la ausencia o extinción de algo. Pero, también la extensión de algo.

V.- CONSEJOS

Como hemos visto, un "Phrasal Verb", es la suma de 2 elementos. Si conocemos su significado por separado, en muchos casos nos podremos dar una idea de lo que muchos de ellos significan. Para otros, debemos contar con un buen diccionario. Si el diccionario es de "Phrasal Verbs", aún mejor.

PREPOSICIONES

Una de las partes gramaticales que más problemas da al alumno es LA PREPOSICIÓN.
Hay varios tipos de preposiciones. En este apartado nos ocupamos de las más comunes e intentaremos aclarar las dudas.

1.- PREPOSICIONES DE LUGAR

Las más comunes son :

IN = Dentro, en

        I'm IN the classroom.

ON = En, encima de

        The book is ON the table.

AT = En un lugar no cerrado del todo, en un ambiente

        He is AT home

ABOVE = Por encima de

        The plane flies ABOVE the clouds.

BELOW = Por debajo de

        My brother's flat is BELOW mine

OVER = Por sobre algo, Por encima de algo

       OVER the rainbow

BY = Por

       Stay BY my side

UNDER = Debajo

      My dog is UNDER the table

BESIDE = Al lado de

      My house is BESIDE the lake

BEHIND = Detrás

      Your suitcase is BEHIND the door

IN FRONT OF = Delante de

      The teacher is IN FRONT OF the class


2.- PREPOSICIONES DE TIEMPO

IN = Se usa para :

a) Partes del dia (IN the morning/afternoon/evening)

b) Siglos (IN the 19th century, etc)

c) Años (IN 1984, 1990, 2013, etc)

d) Meses (IN January/February/March/.... etc)

e) Estaciones del año ( IN Summer/Winter/Spring/Fall)


ON = Se usa en :

a) Dias de la semana (ON Monday/Wednesday/Sunday/... etc)

b) Fechas especiales (ON Christmas day/New Year's day/...etc)

c) Fechas en general ( ON the 1st of January/November 9/January 1, 2015/.. etc)


AT = Se utiliza en :

a) Hora (AT half past four/Three pm/.. etc)

b) Noche (AT night/midnight)

c) Fechas o periodos de celebración ( AT Easter/Christmas)

NOTA : No confundir

ON Christmas day = Se indica el DIA

AT Christmas = Sólo se indica la celebración o periodo.


3.- PREPOSICIONES DE MOVIMIENTO

TO/TOWARDS = Hacia algún lugar

      My friend comes TO/TOWARDS me.

ALONG = A lo largo de

     John drives ALONG the road

THROUGH = A través de

     I can see the people looking THROUGH the window.

ACROSS = Atravesar, cruzar

     Jack is going ACROSS the street.

UNDER = Bajo, debajo de

     The fish swims UNDER the sea

INTO = Entrar, ir hacia dentro de algo

     When I openned the door, Jane came INTO my house

OUT OF = Fuera de, ir fuera

     The cook came OUT OF the kitchen.

PREPOSITIONS OF TIME

Las preposiciones de tiempo son IN, ON y AT. Y se utilizan de la siguiente manera :

IN
- the morning/afternoon/evening
- 1984 (año)
- December
- the 19th century
- Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring

ON
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- 10th january

AT
- half past four
- 3pm/3 o'clock
- midnight
- night

NOTA : En inglés, los años se dicen separando 2 de los cuatro digitos. Ejemplo :

1984 - nineteen eighty-four
(naintín eíti for)

Pero, hoy en dia decimos :

2009 - two thousand and nine
(tu tausénd and náin)

NOTA 2 : Para decir la fecha se utilizan los números ordinales, ejemplo :

- 10th January (ON the Tenth of January)

Nótese que en las terceras personas del singular la conjugación es "IS". Truco : recordar este punto.

                                                              TELLING THE TIME

La pregunta mas usual para pedir la hora es :

* What time is it? - ¿Qué hora(s) es/son?
(uát táim is ít?)

La respuesta es :

* It is/it's ....

Para decir la hora debemos tener en cuenta 2 reglas :

1.- Si observamos un reloj de agujas (como el de este blog, por ejemplo),
la dividiremos en 2. Una mitad con los 6 primeros números, y la otra mitad
empezando por el 6 y acabando en el 12.
En la primera mitad utilizaremos PAST. Esto indica los minutos PASADOS de una
hora determinada. Por ejemplo :

9 : 10 = Nine PAST Ten - Diez minutos PASADOS de las 9

Para la otra mitad usaremos TO. Esto indica los minutos que faltan PARA llegar
a una hora determinada. Por ejemplo :

8 : 50 = Ten TO Nine - Diez minutos PARA las 9

2.- Para decir los minutos de una hora, podemos utilizar los números naturales.
Pero llegados a los cuartos y mitad, es mejor utilizar :

A Quarter = Un Cuarto (15 minutos)
Half = Mitad (Media hora)

Finalmente para decir la hora en punto utilizaremos O'CLOCK. Ejemplo :

10 : 00 = Ten o'clock

NOTA : Para un mejor aprendizaje de este tema, es conveniente usar un reloj de
agujas.
