EASTER AND HOLY WEEK - READING

Fuentes:  https://www.britannica.com/topic/Easter-holiday

                    https://www.britannica.com/topic/Holy-Week

1.- Definition

Easter, principal festival of the Christian church, which celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his Crucifixion. The earliest recorded observance of an Easter celebration comes from the 2nd century, though the commemoration of Jesus’ Resurrection probably occurred earlier.

The English word Easter, which parallels the German word "Ostern", is of uncertain origin. There is now widespread consensus that the word derives from the Christian designation of Easter week as in "albis", a Latin phrase that was understood as the plural of alba (“dawn”) and became "eostarum" in Old High German, the precursor of the modern German and English term. The Latin and Greek "Pascha" (“Passover”) provides the root for "Pâques", the French word for Easter.

2.- The Date Of Easter

In Asia Minor, Christians observed the day of the Crucifixion on the same day that Jews celebrated the Passover offering—that is, on the 14th day of the first full moon of spring. The Resurrection, then, was observed two days later, regardless of the day of the week.

In the West the Resurrection of Jesus was celebrated on the first day of the week, Sunday, when Jesus had risen from the dead.

Increasingly, the churches opted for the Sunday celebration. The Council of Nicaea in 325 decreed that Easter should be observed on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox (March 21). Easter, therefore, can fall on any Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

3.- The Holy Week

Holy Week, in the Christian church, the week between Palm Sunday and Easter, observed with special solemnity as a time of devotion to the Passion of Jesus Christ. In the Greek and Roman liturgical books, it is called the Great Week because great deeds were done by God during this week. The name Holy Week was used in the 4th century by St. Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria, and St. Epiphanius of Constantia. Originally, only Good Friday and Holy Saturday were observed as holy days. Later, Wednesday was added as the day on which Judas plotted to betray Jesus, and by the beginning of the 3rd century the other days of the week had been added.

By the later 4th century the practice had begun of separating the various events and commemorating them on the days of the week on which they occurred: Judas’s betrayal and the institution of the Eucharist on Maundy Thursday; the Passion and death of Christ on Good Friday; his burial on Saturday; and his Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

4.- Easter Customs And Traditions

The custom of the Easter lamb appropriates both the appellation used for Jesus in Scripture (“behold the lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world,” John 1:29) and the lamb’s role as a sacrificial animal in ancient Israel. In antiquity Christians placed lamb meat under the altar, had it blessed, and then ate it on Easter.

The use of painted and decorated Easter eggs was first recorded in the 13th century. The egg itself became a symbol of the Resurrection. Just as Jesus rose from the tomb, the egg symbolizes new life emerging from the eggshell.

The custom of associating a rabbit or bunny with Easter arose in Protestant areas in Europe in the 17th century but did not become common until the 19th century. The Easter rabbit is said to lay the eggs as well as decorate and hide them.

Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday, I'm in love

Chorus B

Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate

I don't care if Monday's black
Tuesday, Wednesday, heart attack
Thursday, never looking back
It's Friday, I'm in love

Monday you can hold your head
Tuesday, Wednesday, stay in bed
Or Thursday watch the walls instead
It's Friday, I'm in love

(Repeat Chorus B)

Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise

Throw out your frown
And just smile at the sound
Sleek as a shriek, spinning 'round and 'round

THE BEATLES Part 1 (SONG TITLES)

1.- Please Please me

Ejemplo :

Pleased to meet you = Encantado de conocerle.

Finalmente, el título se traduciría como :

Por Favor Compláceme

2.- Love Me Do

I love you.
I do love you. (con énfasis)

Peter doesn't have a blue car.
Peter does not have a blue car. (con énfasis)

3.- Till There Was You

"There Was You"

NO es correcta por la conjugación del verbo "To Be" en pasado para la segunda persona del singular (You).

I was
You were
He was
She was
It was
We were
You were
They were

4.- A Hard Day's Night

Peter's friends

McDonald's Restaurant

A dog's house

A tener en cuenta :

The house's walls (Incorrecto)
The walls of the house (Correcto)

Party's night (Incorrecto)
Party night   (Correcto)

5.- If I Fell

If I Fell In Love With You

Entonces nos encontramos con la expresión :

To Fall In Love with (somebody / something) = Enamorarse de (alguien / algo)

I fall
You fall
He falls
She falls
It falls
We fall
You fall
They fall

6.- Can't Buy Me Love

Algunos lo traducen como :

No Puedes Comprar Mi Amor

Pero, debería ser :

No Puedo Comprarme Amor

Esto es por la siguiente estrofa :

I don't care too much for money / For money can't buy me love.

Because
'Cause
Cos
For

7.- Any Time At All

8.- Eight Days A Week

Monday = lunes
Tuesday = martes
Wednesday = miércoles
Thursday = jueves
Friday = viernes
Saturday = sábado
Sunday = domingo

Three times a year = Tres veces al año / Tres veces por año.

9.- Ticket To Ride

She's got a ticket to ride / But she don't care

a) She's got = She has got = Ella tiene

1) I have

I have
You have
He has
She has
It has
We have
You have
They have

Para preguntas, necesitamos el auxiliar "Do" o "Does", según el sujeto.

Do you have?
Does she have?

NOTA.- "Do" y "Does" NO tienen significado cuando actúan como verbos auxiliares.

2) I have got

Have you got ...?

b) She Don't Care

She doesn't care = A ella no le importa

10.- Nowhere Man

No = No, ninguno, ninguna

Any = Alguno(s), alguna(s), ninguno, ninguna

Por tanto, el título NO podría ser :

Anywhere Man

Porque podría tener diversas interpretaciones debido a "Any".

I can see nothing.
I can't see anything.

There is nothing to lose.
There isn't anything to lose.

Anywhere, anybody, anything, etc.

11.- Let It Be

Diversas son las traducciones de este título. Algunas de ellas son :

"Déjalo Ser"
"Déjalo Estar"
"Que Así Sea"

Usamos "Let" para permisos :

Let me in, please = Permítame entrar, por favor.

Sugerencias :

Let's go! = Let us go! = Vamos!

Ofrecimientos :

Let me open the door for you = Permítame que le abra la puerta.

Pero además :

Let = Rent = Alquilar

Ejemplo :

Flat To Let

12.- I'm Down

"Estoy Abatido"
"Estoy Deprimido"
"Estoy Desanimado"

Otra forma de decir lo mismo es :

To feel down = Abatirse, deprimirse, desanimarse.

13.- Day Tripper

To take a trip = Hacer un viaje.

Cut
Cutter
Cutting

Trip
Tripper
Tripping

14.- We Can Work It Out

To work (something) out = Resolver / Solucionar (algo)

Por ello traduciremos el título :

"Podemos Resolverlo / Solucionarlo"

I work from Monday to Friday.

This machine doesn't work.

Do you think, your idea will work?

15.- Don't Let Me Down

Lo podemos traducir como :

"No Me Decepciones"
"No Me Defraudes"

To let (somebody) down = Decepcionar, defraudar

                                                              TELLING THE TIME

* What time is it? - ¿Qué hora(s) es/son?
(uát táim is ít?)

La respuesta es :

* It is/it's ....

hora determinada.

8 : 50 = Ten TO Nine - Diez minutos PARA las 9

A Quarter = Un Cuarto (15 minutos)
Half = Mitad (Media hora)

agujas.
