OCTOPUS'S GARDEN - THE BEATLES

1.- Historia

Ringo conoce a The Beatles en Hamburgo, Alemania. Algunas canciones con su primera voz son "Yellow Submarine", "Act Naturally", "Honey Don't" y "With A Little Help From My Friends".

2.- Lyrics

(Chorus)

I'd like to be

Under the sea

In an octopus's garden

In the shade

He'd let us in

Knows where we've been

In his octopus's garden

In the shade

I'd ask my friends to come and see

An octopus's garden with me

(Repeat Chorus)

We would be warm

Below the storm

In our little hideaway

Beneath the waves

Resting our head

On the seabed

In an octopus's garden

Near a cave

We would sing and dance around

Because we know, we can't be found

(Repeat Chorus)

We would shout

And swim about

The coral that lies beneath the waves

Oh, what joy

For every girl and boy

Knowing they're happy,

And they're safe

We would be so happy, you and me

No one there to tell us what to do

I'd like to be under the sea

In an octopus's garden with you

In an octopus's garden with you

In an octopus's garden with you

2.- Lyrics

Gazing through the window at the world outside
Wondering will mother Earth survive
Hoping that mankind will stop abusing her
Sometime

After all there's only just the two of us
And here we are still fighting for our lives
Watching all of history repeat itself
Time after time

(Chorus)

I'm just a dreamer
I dream my life away
I'm just a dreamer
Who dreams of better days

I watch the sun go down like everyone of us
I'm hoping that the dawn will bring a sign
A better place for those Who will come after us ...
This time

(Repeat Chorus)

Your higher power may be God or Jesus Christ
It doesn't really matter much to me
Without each others help there ain't no hope for us
I'm living in a dream of fantasy
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah

If only we could all just find serenity
It would be nice if we could live as one
When will all this anger, hate and bigotry ...
Be gone?

I'm just a dreamer
I dream my life away

Who dreams of better days

A)

a) Spicy Potatoes

b) "Bravas" Potatoes (Spicy potatoes)

Ejemplo:

- Three Delicious Fried Rice

C)

Un restaurante francés.

Entre las curiosas traducciones podemos leer "Bravas, Fried Potatoes In Two Spicy Sauce".

Y al final leemos "And minimum for two people", el cual debería ser "And for two people minimum".

SUJETO + HAVE / HAS + PAST PARTICIPLE (Irregular Verbs) / "_ed" (Regular Verbs) + Complemento

http://inglespedia.blogspot.com.es/2016/07/tmb-ingles-usa-en-europa.html

a) Inglés Británico

4.- For He's A Jolly Good Fellow

Existen varias versiones. Las dos principales son las que incluimos.

A.- British version

THE BEATLES Part 2 (SONG LYRICS)

a) All My Loving

"And I'll send all my loving to you /
All my loving, I will send to you"

SUJETO + WILL + VERBO PRINCIPAL + COMPLEMENTO

"I'll (I will) send all my loving to you"

b) And I Love Her

"Bright are the stars that shine
Dark is the sky"

Dark = Oscuro
Bright = Brillante

La forma natural de expresar esto sería:

The stars are shinely brighting
The sky is dark

c) No Reply

"I saw you peep through the window."

Peep through = Atisbar, espiar

En su lugar, The Beatles podría haber utilizado "Look through".

Pipear = Husmear, curiosear, chismear

Te he visto pipeando a los vecinos.

d) Baby's In Black

"Baby's in black
And I'm feeling blue"

"She dresses in black
And though he'll never come back
She's dressed in black"

To feel blue = Sentirse triste

e) Honey Don't

"Everything about you
Is so doggone sweet"

Doggone = Maldito!, Maldita!, Condenado!, Condenada!

Por lo que se podría traducir

"Todo acerca de ti
Es tan condenadamente dulce"

Otra canción popular que utiliza ésta palabra es "The Girl Is Mine" de Michael Jackson y Paul McCartney (ex-Beatle). Curioso ¿no?

"The doggone girl is mine"

f) Everybody Is Trying To Be My Baby

"Walked her home
I had a nice clean date"

Walk the dog = Pasear al perro
Walk + distance/places = Recorrer
Walk around = Pasear
Walk on air = Estar muy contento

La palabra "Date" NO sólo significa "Fecha". Coloquialmente, sirve para definir una "Cita (romántica)".

Are you dating him? = ¿Estás saliendo con él?

How was your date?

g) The Night Before

"Was I so unwise
The night before"

Unwise = Imprudente

h) Another Girl

"Who will love me till the end
Through thick and thin
She will always be my friend"

Through thick and thin = Contra viento y marea

Always = Siempre

Adverb = Ad = Delante + Verb = Verbo

i) It's Only Love

"I get high
When I see you go by"

La primera línea es una expresión coloquial.

To get high = Excitar(se)

Go by = Pasar

As time goes by = Con el paso del tiempo

j) Yesterday

"Now I long for yesterday"

To long for = Añorar, anhelar

Long = Largo, longitud

Pero, en realidad, tiene varios usos.

How long does it take ...? = ¿Cuánto se tarda en ...?

This table is 70 cm. long = Esta mesa mide 70 cm.

I've waited for it so long = He esperado tanto tiempo por esto.

Finalmente,

Yesterday = Ayer
Today = Hoy
Tomorrow = Mañana
The day after tomorrow = Pasado mañana
The day before yesterday = Hace dos días

k) Drive My Car

"And she said
Baby is understood
working for peanuts
is all very fine"

Understood = Comprensible, entendible

El cual es el pasado de "Understand"

Understand = Entender, Comprender

Did you understand? = ¿Entendió?

I don't understand = No entiendo / comprendo

Stand, stood, stood
Understand, Understood, Understood

Come, came, come
Become, Became, Become

Peanut = Cacahuete, Maní

Peanuts = Miseria

Por lo que:

Working for peanuts = Trabajar por (una) miseria

l) Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

"He wants you all to sing along"

To want (somebody) to do (something)

I want you to go to the supermarket = Quiero que vayas al supermercado

Por otra parte encontramos:

To sing along = Acompañar cantando

m) With A Little Help From My Friends

"Lend me your ears and
I'll sing you a song
I'll get by
With a litle help from my friends"

Lend me your ears = Escúchame con atención

Y en la tercera línea, entendemos:

I'll get by = Lo lograré, lo conseguiré

THE BEATLES Part 1 (SONG TITLES)

1.- Please Please me

Ejemplo :

Pleased to meet you = Encantado de conocerle.

Finalmente, el título se traduciría como :

Por Favor Compláceme

2.- Love Me Do

I love you.
I do love you. (con énfasis)

Peter doesn't have a blue car.
Peter does not have a blue car. (con énfasis)

3.- Till There Was You

"There Was You"

NO es correcta por la conjugación del verbo "To Be" en pasado para la segunda persona del singular (You).

I was
You were
He was
She was
It was
We were
You were
They were

4.- A Hard Day's Night

Peter's friends

McDonald's Restaurant

A dog's house

A tener en cuenta :

The house's walls (Incorrecto)
The walls of the house (Correcto)

Party's night (Incorrecto)
Party night   (Correcto)

5.- If I Fell

If I Fell In Love With You

Entonces nos encontramos con la expresión :

To Fall In Love with (somebody / something) = Enamorarse de (alguien / algo)

I fall
You fall
He falls
She falls
It falls
We fall
You fall
They fall

6.- Can't Buy Me Love

Algunos lo traducen como :

No Puedes Comprar Mi Amor

Pero, debería ser :

No Puedo Comprarme Amor

Esto es por la siguiente estrofa :

I don't care too much for money / For money can't buy me love.

Because
'Cause
Cos
For

7.- Any Time At All

8.- Eight Days A Week

Monday = lunes
Tuesday = martes
Wednesday = miércoles
Thursday = jueves
Friday = viernes
Saturday = sábado
Sunday = domingo

Three times a year = Tres veces al año / Tres veces por año.

9.- Ticket To Ride

She's got a ticket to ride / But she don't care

a) She's got = She has got = Ella tiene

1) I have

I have
You have
He has
She has
It has
We have
You have
They have

Para preguntas, necesitamos el auxiliar "Do" o "Does", según el sujeto.

Do you have?
Does she have?

NOTA.- "Do" y "Does" NO tienen significado cuando actúan como verbos auxiliares.

2) I have got

Have you got ...?

b) She Don't Care

She doesn't care = A ella no le importa

10.- Nowhere Man

No = No, ninguno, ninguna

Any = Alguno(s), alguna(s), ninguno, ninguna

Por tanto, el título NO podría ser :

Anywhere Man

Porque podría tener diversas interpretaciones debido a "Any".

I can see nothing.
I can't see anything.

There is nothing to lose.
There isn't anything to lose.

Anywhere, anybody, anything, etc.

11.- Let It Be

Diversas son las traducciones de este título. Algunas de ellas son :

"Déjalo Ser"
"Déjalo Estar"
"Que Así Sea"

Usamos "Let" para permisos :

Let me in, please = Permítame entrar, por favor.

Sugerencias :

Let's go! = Let us go! = Vamos!

Ofrecimientos :

Let me open the door for you = Permítame que le abra la puerta.

Pero además :

Let = Rent = Alquilar

Ejemplo :

Flat To Let

12.- I'm Down

"Estoy Abatido"
"Estoy Deprimido"
"Estoy Desanimado"

Otra forma de decir lo mismo es :

To feel down = Abatirse, deprimirse, desanimarse.

13.- Day Tripper

To take a trip = Hacer un viaje.

Cut
Cutter
Cutting

Trip
Tripper
Tripping

14.- We Can Work It Out

To work (something) out = Resolver / Solucionar (algo)

Por ello traduciremos el título :

"Podemos Resolverlo / Solucionarlo"

I work from Monday to Friday.

This machine doesn't work.

Do you think, your idea will work?

15.- Don't Let Me Down

Lo podemos traducir como :

"No Me Decepciones"
"No Me Defraudes"

To let (somebody) down = Decepcionar, defraudar

IN MY LIFE - BEATLES

GRAMMAR

Apreciamos el uso del PRESENT PERFECT TENSE.

Though, some have changed, some forever, not for better.

I've loved them all

I've es la unión de I + HAVE

En las frases :

1) When I think of love

2) And think about them

"Think of" y "Think about" significan "Pensar en".

a) When I think of you.

b) Think about it!

READING - THE BEATLES

LIVERPOOL is a big industrial city in the north-west of ENGLAND. It is famous for its port and its football clubs too. It is also famous because the members of a very important group, THE BEATLES, are from here.
JOHN WINSTON LENNON is born in LIVERPOOL on october 9th 1940. His father and mother separate when he is very young and JOHN goes to live with his aunt MIMI (sister of his mother) and uncle GEORGE.
In 1956 his aunt MIMI buys him a guitar. He forms the group QUARRYMEN with friends at school.
In 1957 a friend at school introduces JOHN to PAUL McCARTNEY. At the end of the year PAUL introduces JOHN to another student, GEORGE HARRISON.
Between 1957 and 1958 they play in Dance Halls and Clubs in LIVERPOOL.
At the end of 1958 JOHN introduces STUART SUTCLIFFE to the group. They change their name to THE SILVER BEATLES.
In 1959 they meet ALAN WILLIAMS, a concert promotor. WILLIAMS organises a tour of HAMBURG, WEST GERMANY, in 1960 with a new member PETE BEST.
The night before the first show, the HAMBURG police discover that GEORGE is not eighteen years old and order him to leave GERMANY. GEORGE goes to ENGLAND ad JOHN, PAUL, STUART and PETE return in december.
In 1961 they begin to play at the Cavern Club in LIVERPOOL. In june they make their first record MY BONNIE with TONY SHERIDAN.
One day BRIAN EPSTEIN the editor of an important music magazine, goes to the Cavern and hears THE BEATLES. After three or four visits he is their manager.
In october 1962 PARLOPHONE RECORD COMPANY accepts their first single. RINGO STARR plays with them. On the 4th november their first song LOVE ME DO is in the charts.
In 1963 they record another single PLEASE, PLEASE ME and the album WITH THE BEATLES.
In 1964 they go to U.S.A. on tour. They return to ENGLAND and make their first film A HARD DAY'S NIGHT.
In 1965 the UK Government gives them the MBE.
In 1966 they record their new lp REVOLVER.
In 1967 they make their second film HELP, and they record the lp SERGEANT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND. People start to say that THE BEATLES are interested in drugs. And many people study the words of the songs, for example LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS (LSD).
In 1967 they make the peace song ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE. In september, BRIAN EPSTEIN dies. Soon after, they make the film MAGICAL MISTERY TOUR. In december they form APPLE, the BEATLES' recording company.
In 1968 they go to INDIA to see MAHARISHI MAHESH YOGI and they study oriental religions.
There are problems in the group. JOHN makes a record separately with YOKO ONO. APPLE has financial problems.
In 1969 APPLE records many songs but releases them in 1970 in the lp LET IT BE. The group makes a film of the same name. In august THE BEATLES make their last album together.
At the beginning of 1970, McCARTNEY abandons the group and JOHN, GEORGE and RINGO begin individual careers. PAUL forms a new group PAUL McCARTNEY and the WINGS. JOHN makes two famous albums, IMAGINE and DOUBLE FANTASY. GEORGE makes MY SWEET LORD and RINGO makes YOU'RE SIXTEEN.
On december 8th 1980 LENNON is assassinated in NEW YORK. In 1985 his son JULIAN LENNON makes the song IT'S MUCH TOO LATE FOR GOODBYE.
Today many years after the end of the group, everybody recognises them as the most important group in the history of Modern POP and ROCK 'N' ROLL music.

I - My (mi)
YOU - Your (tu/su)
HE - His (su masculino)
SHE - her (su femenino)
IT - Its (sin apóstrofe) (su- objeto, animal)
WE - Our (nuestro)
YOU - Your (vuestro)
They - Their (su - ellos)

                                                                        DO  -  DOES

SUJETO + VERBO PRINCIPAL + COMPLEMENTO

Ejemplo :

* LIVERPOOL is a big industrial city

DO -DOES se conjuga de la siguiente manera:

I - DO
YOU - DO
HE/SHE/IT - DOES
WE/YOU/THEY - DO

Ejemplos :

* Do you speak ENGLISH?
(du iú spík ínglish)
No, I don't
(no ái dont)

* Does he play the piano?
(das ji pléi de piano?)
Yes, he does

* I speak ENGLISH

* He plays the piano
