OFF


Dedicamos esta publicacióna a la palabra opuesta a ON.


1.- Off (Sustantivo)

a) Desagradable (En general)

- The fish is off. = El pescado está desagradable.

b) Desagradable (Gente)

- He was very off with me. = Él fue muy desagradable conmigo.


2.- Off (Adverbio)

a) Distancia (Espacio)

- 5 kilometers off. = A 5 kilómetros.

b) Distancia (Tiempo)

- Your birthday is only one week off. = Sólo queda una semana para tu cumpleaños.

c) Quitado, Sin

- Enter with your shoes off, please. = Ingrese descalzo, por favor.

d) Apagado

- The tv is off. = La tv está apagada.

e) Rebajas

- This product is 20 per cent off. = Este producto está con 20 por ciento de descuento.

3.- Off (Preposición)

a) Sin ganas de, desenganchado

- They are off drugs. = Ellos están desenganchados.


4.- Off (Sustantivo)

a) La salida o el punto de partida de una competición

- The off = La salida


5.- Otras frases y Expresiones

- Be off! = ¡Vete!

- Turn the radio off. = Apaga la radio.

- The boss gave me the day off. = El jefe me dió el día libre.

- On and off = De vez en cuando.

ON


Una palabra pequeña pero con muchos usos y significados.


1.- On (Adverbio)

Equivale a:

a) Continuidad

- The band played on. = La banda siguió tocando.

b) Señala algo lejano

- Three months on = Tres meses más tarde.

c) Ropa y/o accesorios puestos

- He has his glasses on. = Él lleva puesto las gafas.

d) Encendido o conectado

- Leave the light on. = Deje la luz encendida.

e) Programación

- The film is already on. = La película ya empezó.


2.- On (Preposición)

Significa lo siguiente:

a) Sobre, encima

- It's on the table. = Está sobre la mesa.

b) Fecha

- I play football on Saturdays. = Yo juego al fútbol los sábados.

c) Acerca de (algo)

- The meeting is on the new products. = La reunión es acerca de los nuevos productos.

d) Consumo

- To live on bread and butter. = Vivir de pan y agua.

e) Por cuenta de

- Drinks are on me. = Las bebidas corren por mi cuenta.

f) De

- It's on offer. = Está de oferta.


3.- Otras expresiones

a) To be on (for something)

- Are you on for this game? = ¿Te apetece jugar este partido?

b) On and on = Sin parar

c) Add-on = Accesorio

d) Carry-on baggage = Equipaje de mano

e) On-air = En el aire, en directo.

f) Spot on = Preciso, acertado

OFF - DEFINICIÓN Y USOS


En un artículo anterior nos ocupamos de la palabra ON. En esta ocasión hacemos lo propio con OFF.

1.- Definición

Tiene varios significados según su uso.

a) OFF como Adjetivo

Se usa para referirse a algo malo, desagradable o en mal estado.

- This milk is off = Esta leche está cortada.

- He was off with me. = Él se portó mal conmigo.

b) OFF como Adverbio

b.1) Tiempo y distancia

- The village is 20 kms off. = El pueblo está a 20 kilómetros de distancia.

- Your birthday is a week off. = Tu cumpleaños está a una semana.

b.2) Falto, eliminado o apagado

- Bread is off. = No hay pan.

- The meeting is off. = Se ha cancelado/eliminado la reunión.

- The radio is off. = La radio está apagada.

c) OFF como Sustantivo

Equivale a la salida (de una carrera)

- They are ready for the off. = Ellos están listos para la salida.

d) OFF como Preposición

En este caso lo veremos en la gran mayoría de veces, formando parte de un Phrasal Verb

- Back off = Dejar en paz a alguien.

- Beg off = Disculparse

- Call off = Suspender

- Doze off = Quedarse dormido

- Face off = Enfrentarse

- Get off = Bajarse de un vehículo de transporte público.

- Keep off = No acercarse

- Pair off = Emparejarse

- Set off = Salir

- Take off = Despegar, elevarse

ON - DEFINICIÓN Y USOS


1.- Definición

Esta palabra tiene varios significados según su uso. En las siguientes líneas los detallamos.

a) ON como Adverbio

a.1.- Continuidad

- Go on = Continúa, sigue, siga.

a.2.- Tiempo

- From that day on = A partir de ese día.

a.3.- Ropa

- Put your hat on = Ponte el sombrero.

a.4.- Encendido o conectado (máquinas y artefactos eléctricos)

- Leave the light on, please. = Deja la luz encendida por favor.

a.5.- Trabajo

- Which doctor is on today? = ¿Qué doctor está hoy?

a.6.- Vehículos

- Welcome on board! = ¡Bienvenido a bordo!

a.7.- Uso coloquial

- Are you on for this game? = ¿Te apetece jugar este partido? (To be on for something)

- On and on = Sin parar (expresión)

b) ON como Preposición

b.1.- En

- The picture is on the wall. = La foto está en la pared.

b.2.- Encima

- I've got no money on me. = No llevo dinero encima.

b.3.- Fechas

- On May 3rd. = El 3 de mayo.

b.4.- Acerca de (algo/alguien)

- This book is on social networks. = Este libro es acerca de las redes sociales.

b.5.- Consumo

- He's on tranquilizers. = Él está tomando calmantes.

b.6.- Por cuenta de alguien

- Drinks are on me. = Las bebidas corren de mi cuenta. (Yo pago)

b.7.- Teléfono

- James is on the phone. = James está en el teléfono.

b.8.- Actividad o estado

- I'm on holiday. = Estoy de vacaciones.

- She's on duty. = Ella está de servicio.

FIVE TYPES OF PHRASES

El siguiente artículo contiene 5 tipos de frases que todo alumno de inglés debería saber reconocer.

 

1.- Noun Phrase

En esta frase, la cabeza es el sustantivo.

- My favourite band.

- The woman in the red dress.

 

2.- Verb Phrase

En este caso, la cabeza es el verbo.

- She laughed.

- I can’t swim.

 

3.- Adjective Phrase

Aquí la cabeza de la frase es el adjetivo.

- The food was wonderful.

- We saw a big fish.

 

4.- Adverb Phrase

El adverbio es quien manda en este tipo de frase.

- She dances beautifully.

- We studied intensively.

 

5.- Prepositional Phrase

En este último tipo de frase, el centro es la preposición.

- Your dinner is on the table.

- The shop is by the bus station.

MADE

 

En esta ocasión, nos centramos en algunos de los usos más comunes del pasado y participio del verbo “Make”: “Made”.

1.- Made in

Lo vemos en diversos productos para indicar su lugar de fabricación o creación.

Ejemplos:

- Made in China. = Hecho en China.

- Made in Japan. = Hecho en Japón.

- Made in Spain. = Hecho en España.

 

2.- Made From

Se utiliza para mencionar de qué forma ha sido hecho un producto.

Ejemplos:

- Plastic is made from oil. = El plástico está hecho de aceite.

- Those canoes were made from tree trunks. = Aquellas canoas fueron hechas de troncos de árboles.

 

3.- Made of

Indica el material básico utilizado para crear un producto.

- My necklace is made of silver. Mi collar está hecho de plata.

- What’s this table made of? = ¿De qué está hecha esta mesa?

 

4.- Made out of

Sirve para mencionar cuando un objeto ha sido cambiado o transformado para dar vida a otra.

Ejemplos:

- I have candle-holders made out of wine bottles. = Tengo veleros hechos de botellas de vino.

- They found tents made out of old plastic sheets. = Ellos encontraron tiendas hechas de plástico.

 

5.- Made with

Esta forma se utiliza sobre todo en la comida y bebidas.

- This dish is made with beef, red peppers and herbs. = Este plato está hecho con carne, pimientos rojos y hierbas.

- Is sushi always made with raw fish? = ¿El sushi siempre está hecho con pescado crudo?

LIKE



Desde la aparición de las redes sociales, la palabra "Like" se ha hecho muy popular. Pero, ¿sabía usted que tiene varios usos?
En el siguiente artículo detallamos algunos de los más comunes.

1.- Verbo transitivo = Gustar

- Do you like fish? = ¿Te/Le gusta el pescado?
- I like it! = ¡Me gusta!
- What would you like to have? = ¿Qué le gustaría tomar? (Camarero/Mozo en un restaurante)
- I don't like it! = ¡No me gusta!

2.- Preposición = Como

a) Comparación

- He acted like a child. = Él actuó como un niño.
- Run like the wind! = ¡Corre como el viento!

b) Ejemplo

- European countries like Spain, Italy, Germany, etc. = Países europeos como España, Italia, Alemania, etc.


3.- Conjunción = Como

- It didn't end like I expected it to. = Esto no terminó como yo esperaba.


4.- Sustantivo = Lo mismo, igual, parecido/a

- I don't speak to the likes of you. = Yo no hablo con (personas iguales) como tú.
- I've got 1000 likes! = ¡Tengo/He obtenido 1000 "me gusta".


5.- Adverbio = Usado con "To Be". También equivale a otros verbos como "say" o "mean".

- John came in and he was like "Where is everybody?" = Jhon entró y dijo ¿Dónde están todos?

- I was like so embarrassed. = Estaba muy avergonzado/a.

WITH, WITHIN, WITHOUT

1.- With

Es una preposición cuyo significado es "con" y se usa de forma similar que en castellano.


2.- Usos de With

- She arrived with her boyfriend. (junto con)

- I opened the package with a knife. (usando)

- Matt woke with terrible toothache. (teniendo)

- I couldn't sleep with the noise. (debido a)


3.- Within

Esta preposición indica algo que está dentro de un mismo espacio o lugar.

- People who live within the city pay high local taxes.

También se usa con el tiempo.

- I should arrive within 2 days.


4.- Without

Es lo contrario de "with", es decir, "sin".


5.- Usos de Without

- I can't drink tea without milk. (sin)

- I found myself in a strange country, without money. (falto de, sin)

- Don't go out without an umbrella. It's raining. (por un motivo)

NOTA.- La estructura : Without + verbo + _ing, puede indicar que alguien no hizo algo.

- I couldn't get the picture out of the frame without breaking the glass.

LIKE

1.- Like (Verb)

El verbo "Gustar" se hizo más popular que nunca desde la aparición de Facebook.

- I like pasta.

- Do you like cheese?

- He doesn't like his job.

Cuando precede a otro verbo principal, ambos estarán separados por la preposición "To" o el segundo debe acabar en "_ing".

NOTA.- Esta regla es para todos los verbos principales en la posición de la descripción.

Existe una ligera diferencia entre ellos.

- I like to read. (No habla de algo exclusivo o favorito)

- I like reading. (Se refiere a un hobby, "Lectura")


2.- Would Like

Para peticiones y ofrecimientos utilizamos esta combinación.

- Would you like to order?

- I would like a cup of tea, please.

Podríamos definir "Would like" como "Gustaría".


3.- Like (Preposition)

En función de preposición, su significado es "Como" o "Similar (a)".

- I am like my mother.

- The police is looking for someone like that man over there.

A veces, lo encontramos como prefijo o sufijo cumpliendo la misma función.

- People who have similar ideas or interests are like-minded.


4.- What is ... Like?

Esta forma de pregunta es muy común y lo usamos para pedir información de personas o cosas.

- What's the weather like? (¿Cómo está el clima?)

- What is your brother like? (Cómo es tu hermano?) Aquí se refiere al carácter.


5.- Look Like

Para la apariencia física utilizamos esta combinación.

- What does your brother look like?

- He looks like my grandfather. They look like brothers.

ACROSS, OVER, THROUGH

1.- Across

Se refiere, a algo / alguien que está al otro lado, o los límites de algún lugar como por ejemplo, un río. Si buscamos el significado en el diccionario encontramos : De un lado a otro, al otro lado y a lo largo de, por ejemplo.

- He swam across the sea.

- There's a bridge across the river.

- John came across to see me.


2.- Over

Al igual que Acroos, Over puede utilizarse como preposición o adverbio. Su definición es "algo que está en una posición superior y en movimiento". También podemos encontrar que se usa para indicar un lugar, una repetición o el final de algo.

- A big rock fell over.

- The train station is over there.

- Game over .


3.- Through

En un diccionario encontraremos definiciones como : A través, a lo largo de, durante y por.

- The cat is looking through the window.

- I love walking through the forest.

- We're open from Monday through Friday.


4.- Phrasal Verbs

Algunos de los más comunes con across, over y through.

a) Across

- Come across = Encontrarse con algo / alguien po casualidad, llegar.

- Get across = Hacerse entender por alguien.

- Run across = Toparse o encontrarse con algo.

b) Over

- Cut over = Pasar información de un ordenador o sistema informático a otro en simultáneo.

- Do over = Volver a hacer algo, golpear,

- Get over = Superar o recuperarse de algo, acabar algo de una vez.

c) Through

- Cut through = Atajar, acortar

- Get through = Conseguir hablar (con alguien), pasar (a algo), superar (algo), terminar (algo).

- Put through = Pasar, pagar, llevar a cabo.


5.- Recomendaciones

- Buscar el significado de cada una de estas palabras por tipo o uso (preposición, adverbio).

- Existen más Phrasal Verbs comunes en títulos y letras de canciones, así como también en frases célebres.

ABOUT



Una palabra con más de un uso y más de un significado es el que nos ocupa en esta ocasión.

1.- About = Acerca de

Si miramos el diccionario, el significado básico de "about" como preposición es "acerca de (algo / alguien).

- What is it about? = ¿Acerca de qué es esto?

- I don't know anything about the crime.

- We are going to talk about wild animals.


2.- About = Alrededor, en

Como adverbio, "about" se podría traducir como "alrededor" o "en".

- The meeting is about 1. = La reunión es alrededor de la 1.

- I started teaching about 10 years ago. = Empecé a enseñar alrededor / hace unos / de 10 años.


3.- To Be About To

Se trata de una expresión que significa "estar a punto de (hacer / suceder algo)".

- I was about to call you. = Yo estaba a punto de llamarte.

- Love is about to change my heart. = El amor esta a punto de cambiar mi corazón.


4.- Palabras con About

Existen algunas palabras que suelen acompañar a "About".

- John was concerned about the climate change.

- Patty is very excited about the wedding.

- Don't worry about it.


5.- Recomendaciones

1.- Siempre buscar información acerca de las palabras en diccionarios.

2.- Buscar ejemplos de los diferentes usos de "About".

3.- Evitar traducir a no ser que sea estrictamente necesario.

TO - FOR

En esta ocasión, explicamos la diferencia entre estas dos preposiciones que suelen traer de cabeza a los estudiantes de inglés.

1.- TO - Definition

La palabra "TO" se define como "a", "hacia" y "para". Estas tres definiciones nos van a ayudar a saber cuando colocar esta preposición.

Ejemplos :

- John goes to work. = John va a trabajar. / John va hacia el trabajo.

- It's a quarter to five. = Son un cuarto para las cinco. / Son las cinco menos cuarto (España).

- Give it to me. = Dámelo a mí.


2.- TO - Other uses

a) Esta preposición sirve también para acompañar a un verbo en infinitivo, es decir, sin conjugar.

Ejemplo :

- To go = Ir

- To study = Estudiar

- To work = Trabajar


b) También se utiliza para separar dos verbos principales

Ejemplos :

- I want to play.

- He studied to pass the exam.

- Mike likes to go to the beach.


NOTA.- Dos verbos principales tienen que ir separados por la preposición "to" o colocando el segundo verbo acabado en "-ing"

3.- FOR - Definition

Las definiciones para "for" son : "por", "para", "durante" y "debido" o "porque".

Ejemplos :

- This is for you. = Esto es para ti.

- I'm waiting for him. = Estoy esperando por él.

- James was taking a nap for 2 hours. = James estaba haciendo la siesta durante 2 horas.

- You can't go home now, for it's too late. = No puedes irte a casa ahora, porque es demasiado tarde.


4.- FOR - Other uses

- También suele ir acompañado de expresiones o phrasal verbs.

Ejemplo :

- Look for = Buscar

- Die for = Ansiar

- Care for = Cuidar(se)


5.- Recomendaciones

a) Aprender las definiciones de cada una de las preposiciones.

b) Evitar el uso de traductores en línea.

c) Verificar el sentido de la frase o expresión cuando se traduzca. Esto último no es recomendable salvo, en casos de duda.

LAS 100 PALABRAS MÁS COMUNES EN INGLÉS

Meses atrás, Oxford hizo una lista de las 100 palabras en inglés, más usadas en todo el mundo. La lista es ésta.





































Nosotros lo hemos dividido para un mejor análisis y mayor comprensión.

I.- VERBOS

A.- Verbos Auxiliares

a) Be = Ser, estar

Recordemos la conjugación de este verbo

You are
He is
She is
It is
We are
You are
They are

b) Have

Se conjuga igual que como verbo principal. Aunque su significado (Tener) cambia a "Haber". Se diferencia también porque sirve como verbo auxiliar para los TIEMPOS PERFECTOS.

They have

c) Do

Es importante saber que como verbo auxiliar, NO tiene significado alguno. Pero, como verbo principal, significa "Hacer".

B.- Modal Verbs

a) Will

Se utiliza para el futuro. NO tiene significado alguno como verbo modal. Su función es "futurizar" al verbo principal de una frase.

I will buy it tomorrow. = Lo compraré mañana.

b) Would

Es la forma pasada de Will. Por ello, tampoco tiene significado alguno como verbo modal. Lo que hace es agregar "-ría", "-rían", "-ía", "-ían" al verbo principal de una frase. Se utiliza de manera formal.

Would you like some tea? = ¿Le gustaría algo de té?

c) Can

Tal vez el más conocido de los verbos modales. Significa "Poder" en referencia a la habilidad para hacer algo. Se suele usar de manera informal, aunque también es aceptada en algunos entornos formales.

Can I help you? = ¿Puedo ayudarle?

d) Could

Es el pasado de Can. Se utiliza igual, pero de manera más formal.

Could you speak loud, please? = ¿Podría alzar la voz, por favor?

NOTA.- Todos estos verbos modales NO cambian de forma. Es decir, se conjuga igual para todos los pronombres o sujetos.

C.- Verbos Comunes

Say = Decir

My mother says she's busy = Mi madre dice que está ocupada.

Make = Hacer (obrar, construir)

I make a cup of tea every morning = Yo hago (preparo) una taza de té cada mañana.

Know = Saber, conocer

Do you know the meaning of this word? = ¿Sabes el significado de ésta palabra?

Think = Pensar

What are you thinking about? = ¿En qué piensas?

Use = Usar, utilizar

Jack uses his computer every evening = Jack usa su ordenador cada noche.

Work = Trabajar

Where do you work? = ¿Dónde trabajas?

NOTA.- También significa "Funcionar".

The coffe machine doesn't work = La máquina de café no funciona.

Go = Ir

I go home now = Me voy a casa ahora

Come = Venir

Come to my house = Venir a mi casa

See = Ver (sin prestar atención a algo específico)

When I wake up, I see the ceiling. = Cuando me despierto, veo el techo.

Look = Mirar (con atención)

Look at the board please! = Mirar la pizarra, por favor!

Want = Querer, desear

I want some chocolate = Quiero algo de chocolate.

Like = Gustar

Do you like my car? = ¿Te gusta mi coche?

Give = Dar, entregar

Give me some ideas, please = Dame algunas ideas, por favor

Take = Tomar, coger

They will take a trip = Ellos cogeran un paseo (viaje).

Get = Conseguir, obtener

Los números cardinales se utilizan para fechas y posiciones de competiciones, así como para pisos o plantas de edificios.

VIII.- Palabras confusas

A.- Bien

Well.- Se utiliza como adverbio

John plays very well = John juega muy bien

y para decir como nos sentimos

How are you?
I'm very well, thank you?

Good.- Se usa como adjetivo

John is a good player = John es un buen jugador
Good job! = ¡Buen trabajo!

B.- Sólo

Just.- Se usa para mencionar exactitud

Just in time! = Justo a tiempo

I'm just leaving = Estoy partiendo justo ahora

También significa sólo

I'm just looking =Sólo estoy mirando

Just do it! = ¡Sólo hazlo!

Only.- Se podría decir que es la suma de "One + -ly". Significa sólo, unicaménte, solamente.

Only you = Sólo tú

I'm only joking! = ¡Sólo estoy bromeando!

C.- No

No.- Suele ir al inicio de la frase

No, thank you = No, gracias

Pero también, para negar un sustantivo

I have no money = No tengo (nada de) dinero

Not.- Casi siempre acompaña a un verbo auxiliar o modal. Normalmente se reduce a "n't"

It isn't raining = No está lloviendo

I didn't do it = Yo no lo hice

He couldn't be on time = No pudo llegar a tiempo.

D.- De

From.- Indica procedencia

Mary is from New York = Mary es de New York

I'm coming from the hospital = Yo vengo del hospital

Of = Indica pertenencia

This chair is made of wood = Esta silla está hecha de madera.

The walls of my house are white = Las paredes de mi casa son blancas.

E.- Algo, Nada

Some.- Se utiliza para afirmativo

There are some people in the park = Hay algunas personas en el parque

En algunos casos y con modal verbs, se puede utilizar en preguntas de ofrecimiento.

Would you like some coffee? ¿Le gustaría algo de café?

Any.- Se utiliza para preguntas y frases negativas.

Is there any milk? = ¿Hay algo de leche?

I don't have any car = No tengo (ningún) coche.

IX.- Otras palabras

As = Tan, tanto
All = Todo/a, todos/as
About = Acerca de

ADVANCED TEST

El siguiente es el primer test de nivel ADVANCED que les presentamos.
Igual que en los anteriores, si quereis las respuestas, podéis solicitarlas por medio de un comentario o via email.

I.- Pronouns

Choose the right pronoun.

1) We're much stronger than (they/them) at football.

II.- Present

a) Insert the correct form of the Simple Present or Present Continuous.

a) Rewrite the verbs in brackets in the Future Tense.
