20 UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS



Como en nuestro idioma, algunos sustantivos en inglés son incontables.

La siguiente, es una pequeña lista con 20 de los sustantivos más comunes.

1.- Advice

Su significado es "consejo".

Let me give you a piece of advice.


2.- Bread

Equivale a "pan".

I bought a loaf of bread.


3.- Cake

Se traduce como "pastel", "tarta" o "torta". Puede ser contable e incontable.

She made a birthday cake.


4.- Danger

Significa "peligro".

Look at the danger sign.


5.- Energy

La"energía" también es incontable.

I'm full of energy.


6.- Fruit

Esta palabra suele ser erróneamente usada y pronunciada. La "fruta" siempre es incontable y se pronuncia aproximadamente como "frut".

There are many fruit trees.


7.- Gasoline

Se trata de la palabra "gasolina" que en inglés británico es "petrol".

The car ran out of gasoline.


8.- Homework

Se puede traducir como "deberes" o "tarea (escolar)".

Do your homework!


9.- Ice

Al agua congelada y sólida se le conoce como "hielo". Y como el líquido elemento, es incontable.

Can I have some ice in my juice?


10.- Jam

Los dos equivalentes más comunes son "mermelada (no de cítrico)" y "atasco (tráfico vehícular)".

A traffic jam.


11.- Knowledge

El "conocimiento" también es incontable.

My knowledge of french is poor.


12.- Luggage

Esta palabra y "baggage", comparten el significado de "equipaje".

I only have two pieces of luggage.


13.- Money

En el "dinero", se cuentan los billetes y monedas agrupadas por sus equivalencias.

He's earning a lot of money.


14.- News

Aunque parezca que está en plural, la palabra "noticia" se escribe con "s" al final.

The news is not good.


15.- Paper

En este caso se cuentan las hojas o folios de "papel".

Can you give me a sheet of paper?


16.- Rice

El "arroz" sólo se cuenta por peso. Por eso no es contable.

I prefer brown rice.


17.- Soup

La "sopa" es un alimento líquido que no se puede contar. Se cuentan los recipientes.

A soup bowl.


18.- Time

Con el "tiempo" pasa algo similar que con el dinero; sólo lo podemos contar en forma de minutos, horas, días, etc.

Don't waste your time!


19.- Vision

Equivale a la palabra "vista".

He suffers from double vision.


20.- Water

Como sustantivo significa "agua" y como verbo "regar". La pronunciación también varía si es de USA o de UK.

I only drink water.

THE TIME - Part 2

I.- Conjunto de tiempo

"Time" es el conjunto de lo que se mide en segundos, minutos, horas y años. Según esta definición, el tiempo es incontable. Ejemplo:

- How much time do I have? = ¿Cuánto tiempo tengo?

Pero en algunos casos, también es contable.

- I haven't seen you for a long time!

También es un verbo que significa cronometrar o calcular el tiempo.

- The alarm clock was timed to ring at eight o'clock.

II.- Momentos

"Time" es utilizado además para mencionar momentos en el pasado.

- Once upon a time, .....
- Do you remember the time when we met?
- Call me any time.
- Is it a good time to talk?

III.- Vez, veces

Otro uso de "Time" se refiere a la acción o acciones repetidas.

- How many times have I told you not to do it?
- I go to the cinema twice a week.
- Time after time
- At all times

IV.- Música

En música se define como el compás (Beats) de una melodía o canción.

- To keep time = Mantener el compás.

V.- Matemáticas

Se utiliza "Time" en la multiplicación.

- 5 x 5 = 25 = Five times five equals twenty-five.

VI.- Expresiones

Algunas de las expresiones más comunes son:

- To do something against time = Hacer algo muy deprisa.
- At the same time = En el mismo momento.
- For the time being = Por un pequeño espacio de tiempo.
- To have the time of your life = Disfrutar mucho, pasarlo muy bien.
- In no time = Muy pronto
- In time = Dentro del plazo o la hora establecida.
- In your own time = En tu tiempo libre.
- There's no time like the present = No hay mejor momento que el de ahora.
- Take your time = Toma tu tiempo, sin prisas.
- Time flies = El tiempo vuela.
- Time is money = El tiempo es dinero.
- Time is on your side = El tiempo está de tu parte.
- Only time will tell = Sólo el tiempo lo dirá.
- Time-consuming = Tomar bastante tiempo.
- Time-wasting = Pérdida de tiempo.
- Timeless = Eterno

El siguiente es un test dirigido a personas de nivel ELEMENTARY, es decir, nivel básico o principiante.

NOTA: También equivale a los niveles A1 y A2.

COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

Antes de empezar con el tema del encabezado, debemos tener en cuenta lo siguiente.

A.- SOME - ANY : Significan : alguno, algunos, alguna, algunas. Se utilizan :

1.- SOME : en frases u oraciones afirmativas.
2.- ANY : en frases u oraciones negativas y en pregunta.

EJEMPLO :
a) Please, go and ask PETER for some paper. I don't have any paper on my desk.
(plis, góu and ask píter for sóm péiper. I dont jaf éni péiper on mai desk)

b) Are there any ink in the office?
(ar der éni ink in di ófis?)

B.- A - AN : Significan : uno, una. Se utilizan :

1.- A : en palabras en singular y que empiecen con consonante.
2.- AN : en palabras en singular y que empiecen con vocal o sonido de vocal.

EJEMPLO :
a) A chair is made of wood.
(a cher is méid of gud)

b) A fish swims in water.
(a fish suíms in wóder)

c) A horse is an animal.
(a jors is an ánimal)

THERE IS - THERE ARE : Ambos significan HAY y se utilizan :

1.- THERE IS : para indicar objetos y animales en singular.
2.- THERE ARE : para indicar objetos y animales en plural.

EJEMPLO :
a) THERE is a car on the corner.
(der is a kar on de córner)

b) THERE are children in the park.
(der ar chíldren in de park)

COUNTABLE and UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS : Son sustantivos que podemos o no podemos contar.

1.- COUNTABLE : personas, objetos, animales, personas, etc.
2.- UNCOUNTABLE : objetos que sean de masa o liquido o cosas abstractas.

EJEMPLO :
a) A noun is a word.
(a náun is a uórd)

b) We make butter and cheese from milk.
(uí méik báter an chis from mílk)

NOTA : En los objetos NO contables, SI podemos contar el recipiente o la medida(metros, kilos) que representan.

EJEMPLO :
a) A bunch of carrots.
(a bánch of kárrots)

b) A bottle of wine
(a bátel of uáin)

c) Two cups of coffee.
(tu kaps of cófi)

FORMACIÓN DEL PLURAL : Para formar el plural de las palabras en INGLÉS, debemos tener en cuenta las siguientes reglas :

1.- Se agrega una "S" en la mayoria de las palabras.

EJEMPLO: boy - boys, car - cars, boot - boots.

2.- A las palabras que terminan en S, Z, X, CH, SH, se les agrega ES al final.

EJEMPLO : tax - taxes, beach - beaches, wish - wishes

3.- Si una palabra termina en consonante + Y, ésta última cambia a I, + ES.

EJEMPLO : baby - babies, army - armies, buddy - buddies

4.- Para las palabras que acaban en F o en FE, se sustituye el final por VES.

EJEMPLO : knife - knives, half - halves.
