CHUNK

1.- Definición

Un "chunk" es una frase que se repite en una conversación o en un medio escrito. Se utiliza habitualmente para atraer la atención y dar mayor información de lo que se expone.

2.- Chunks In Speaking

Algunas de las frases más habituales son:

- You know what I mean? = ¿Sabes lo que quiero decir?

"You ask me that again and it will be your last time, you know what I mean?"

- I know what you're saying. = Sé lo que estás diciendo.

"Yes, I know what you're saying".

- You see? = ¿Lo ves?

"I can't do it alone, you see?"

- And that kind of thing = Y ese tipo de cosa.

"When you ask for help and that kind of thing, you'll get it".

- Having said that / Saying that = Habiendo dicho eso / Diciendo eso

"But, having said that his boss fired him".


3.- Chunks In Writing

Algunas de las que se suelen encontrar en un texto son:

- On the other hand = De / Por otro lado

"John is a good worker. On the other hand, he's always late".

- As a result = Como resultado.

"The company got great clients last year. As a result, the boss didn't fire anyone".

- First of all = Primero que nada. / Primero de todo.

"First of all, working procedures should be standardised".


4.- Incomplete Chunks

Este tipo de frases se suele ubicar al principio de una idea.

- I don't know if ... = No sé si ...

"I don't know if you met my parents".

- You know the ... = Sabes el / la / los / las ...

- You know the bank that is next to my house?


5.- Recomendaciones

a.- Hacer una pequeña lista de este tipo de frases.

b.- Evitar su uso excesivo.

c.- Evitar traducir literalmente cada frase de este tipo.

El productor norteamericano Louis Jay Pearlman creó en los noventas grupos de chicos como este. Ante la fama alcanzada por NKOTB, algunos productores intentaron hacer lo mismo. Lou Pearlman atrajo la atención de jóvenes en busca de una oportunidad en el mundo de la música, mediante un anuncio de búsqueda de nuevos artistas.
