BORROW vs. LEND

1.- Borrow

- Can I borrow your pen?

1.1 Borrowed

- John borrowed money from me yesterday.

2.- Lend

- I never lend my videogames to anyone.

2.1 Lent

- John lent me 100$ until next month.

- If you need money, you'll have to borrow from the bank.

- I lent him 10 euros.

Ejemplo :

- James is the tallest pupil in the classroom.

Ejemplo :

- It's difficult to know, who the most intelligent person in the world is.

- Dean is not the least smart person in this world.

* NOTA IMPORTANTE

Ejemplos :

*Good - Best

*Bad - Worst

*Many - Most

PRESENT PERFECT TENSE

SUJETO + HAVE/HAS + PASADO PARTICIPIO DEL VERBO IRREGULAR / VERBOS REGULARES ACABADOS EN -ED + COMPLEMENTO

Ejemplo :

- I have lived here for a long time.

- France has been a republic for many years.

2.- VERBO AUXILIAR "HAVE"

I have

YOU have

HE/SHE/IT has

WE have

YOU have

THEY have

3.- VERBOS REGULARES E IRREGULARES

Work - Worked
Study - Studied
Stop - Stopped

Ejemplos:

- Be - Been

- Speak - Spoken

- Do - Done

- Write - Written

Ejemplo :

- Yo he vivido aquí durante mucho tiempo.

- Have you lived here for a long time?

- Has France been a republic for many years?

En cuanto a las negaciones, se coloca "not" o "n't" a "have / has".

Ejemplo :

- I have not/haven't lived here for a long time.

- France has not/hasn't been a republic for many years.

4.- SINCE, FOR

- I haven't seen Peter since last saturday

- I have waited for an hour exactly.

- The weather has been very warm for a week now.

Ejemplo:

- How long have you worked here? - I have worked here for five years. / Since 1990.

5.- ALREADY, YET, JUST, STILL

a) Already, Yet

Ejemplo:

- I have / I've already done my homework.

- The film hasn't started yet.

b) Just

Ejemplo:

- Peter has just arrived from work.

c) Still

Significa "aún" o "todavía". Suele estar ubicado antes del verbo auxiliar "have /has".

Ejemplo:

- I still haven't found my keys.

6.- HAVE EVER / NEVER

Ejemplo:

- Have you ever been to London?

- My dog has never been dangerous.

- That is the best idea you have ever had.

- Has your computer ever been repaired?

PAST PERFECT TENSE

1.- FORMULA

SUJETO + HAD + PASADO PARTICIPIO DEL VERBO IRREGULAR / VERBO REGULAR ACABADO EN -ED + COMPLEMENTO

Ejemplo:

- I had /I'd seen Elvis Presley when I was 20.

- Jack had finished his homework by 8 o'clock.

2.- HAD

- I had gone to Fred's party when I met July.

- David had drove through a red light when the police stopped him.

3.- VERBOS REGULARES E IRREGULARES

a) Verbos Regulares

Ejemplo:

- Work - Worked

- Like - Liked

b) Verbos Irregulares

Ejemplo:

- Go - Gone

- Cut - Cut

- Take - Taken

4.- USOS

Ejemplo:

a) Reported Clause

- Mike said he had had a day off work.

b) Situaciones cambiadas

- I had wanted to go to the beach, but it's raining!

c) Conditional Form

- If I had seen Pat, I would have invited him to dinner with us.

5.- QUESTIONS

- Had you seen Elvis when you were 20 years old?

- Had he had lunch at work?

6.- HAD HAD

- John told his wife, he had had lunch at work.

IRREGULAR VERBS - SIMPLE PAST AND PAST PARTICIPLE

I.- Tabla o Lista de Verbos Irregulares

II.- Verbos Similares

Ejemplos:

- Arise - Arose - Arisen
- Rise - Rose - Risen

- Awake - Awoke - Awoken
- Wake - Woke - Woken

- Become - Became - Become
- Come - Came - Come

- Forget - Forgot - Forgotten
- Get - Got - Gotten

- Forgive - Forgave - Forgiven
- Give - Gave - Given

- Misunderstand - Misunderstood - Misunderstood
- Understand - Understood - Understood
- Stand - Stood - Stood

III.- Cambiar vocales i, a, u

- Begin - Began - Begun

- Ring - Rang - Rung
- Sing - Sang - Sung
- Spring - Sprang - Sprung
- Swim - Swam - Swum

IV.- Cambiar vocales i, u

CONDITIONAL FORMS

If + Present Simple + Present Simple

- If you light a piece of paper, it burns.

- If you expose an ice-cream in the sun, it melts.

2.- First Conditional

If + Present Simple + Modal Verb with Future meaning

- If he sings well, he will be a good singer.

- If you eat too much, you'll have a stomachache.

(Si comes demasiado, tendrás dolor de estómago.)

- If I see her, I might ask her to come to the party.

     If + Past Simple + Should/Would/Might/Could

- If you decided to participate, you would have to register by the end of this week.

4.- Third Conditional

En este caso, ambas partes son imaginarias. Imaginamos un pasado y un posible resultado.

      If + Past Perfect + Would/Could/Should/Might + Present Perfect

- If I had left earlier, I would have arrived on time.

(Si hubiese/hubiera salido temprano, habría llegado a tiempo.)

- It would have been easier if you had studied for the exam.

If + Past Perfect + Subject + Would

- If we hadn't met Paul, we wouldn't be here now.

(Si no hubiésemos/hubiéramos conocido a Paul, no estaríamos aquí ahora.)

6.- Recomendaciones

a) Tener claros los tiempos verbales:

- Present Simple
- Past Simple
- Present Perfect
- Past Perfect

DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY

I.- Historia

- Gal = Chica
- Frown = Fruncir el ceño.

IV.- Grammar

c) Future (Will)

- I'll give you my phone number.
- Your face will frown.

- Ain't got no cash = Haven't got no cash = No tienes dinero.

e) Modal Verbs

- You might want to sing it.
- He may have to litigate.

f) Hope, expect, wait

I hope you learned it note for note = Espero que lo hayan aprendido nota a nota.

In your life expect some trouble = En tu vida espera algunos problemas.

SILENT NIGHT - STORY

I.- Story

The simple but significative melody of this song was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber in 1818.

The words were written by Father Joseph Mohr. Mohr got the inspiration when he was going to bless a newborn baby. He was so filled with the spirit of the season and with the simple beauty of the mother and infant that when he returned home, he wrote the poem we sing today.

Joseph Mohr was born in Salzburg, Austria. He became a Roman Catholic priest in 1815. In 1818, Mohr asked and organist called Franz Gruber, to set his poem to suitable music. Within a few hours, Gruber composed "Stille Nacht" ("Silent Night").

Franz Gruber was also born in Austria. He was a schoolteacher before he became the organist at St. Nicholas Church. Gruber wrote over 90 musical compositions, but he is best remembered as the composer of "Silent Night".

At first, the song was known as a Tyrolean Folk Song, and it was first published in a song collection called "Vier Achte Tyroler-Lieder" in 1828. In 1954 the King of Prussia, Frederick Wilheim IV, first heard the song and instructed his royal court musicians in Berlin to find out the names of the author and composer.

In 1863, an American Episcopal clergyman called John F. Young, translated the song into English. This is the version we all know. Young served as Bishop of the state of Florida in 1867.

II.- Questions

PAST SIMPLE TENSE

Ejemplo :

a) MICHAEL played football yesterday.
   (Máikel pléid fútbol iésterdéi)

b) DIANA bought a new car.
    (Daiána bóot a niú ka(r))

3.- REGULAR VERBS

Dance - Danced

Love - Loved

Like - Liked

Ejemplo:

Study - studied

Un par de excepciones son:

Say - said

Pay - Paid

- Lose - Lost

"Lost" is a great Tv series.

Make - Made

This Tv was made in Japan.

ANGIE - THE ROLLING STONES

I.- Historia

III.- Vocabulario

Lead = Guiar
Soul = Alma
Smoke = Humo
Whisper = Susurrar, susurro
Weep = Llorar, llanto
Dry = Secar
Alive = Estar vivo/a

Regulares

Satisfied (satisfy) = Satisfacer
Tried (try) = Intentar, probar
Cried (cry) = Llorar
Seemed (seemed) = Parecer

Irregulares

Said (say) = Decir
Held (hold) = Tener, coger

c) The future tense.- Así también, vemos la estructura del tiempo futuro con "Will", en forma interrogativa y con una WH-Question.

When will those clouds all disappear?

Where will it lead us from here?

Disappear = Desaparecer
Will disappear = Desaparecerá

Lead = Guiar
Will lead = Guiará

Existen adverbios similares.

Somewhere = En algún lugar

Ejemplo:

Some (sám)
Where (uér)
Somewhere (sám-uér)

V.- Curiosidad

1.- YES / NO QUESTIONS

a) Verbos Auxiliares

* Am, Is, Are, Was, Were (verbo TO BE)

Ejemplos :

- Am I right?

Yes, you are / No, you aren't.

- Are you busy?

Yes I am / No, I am not.

- Is she a nurse?

Yes, she is / No, she isn't.

* Do, Does, Did

Ejemplos :

- Do you have a car?

Yes, I do / No, I don't.

- Does he play the guitar?

Yes, he does / No, he doesn't.

- Did you do your homework?

Yes, I did / No, I didn't.

* Have, Has, Had

Ejemplos :

- Have you had breakfast?

Yes, I have / No, I haven't.

- Has it been a good idea?

Yes, it has / No, it hasn't.

- Had you run 10 km?

Yes, I had / No, I hadn't.

* Will

Ejemplo :

- Will she be there on time?

Yes, she will / No, she won't.

NOTA.- WON'T = Will + Not

b) Modal Verbs

* Can, Could

- Can you help me?

Yes, I can / No, I can't.

- Could you tell me the time please?

Yes, I could / No, I couldn't.

* May, Might

- May I help you?

Yes, you may / No, you may not.

- Might I borrow your pen?

Yes, you might / No, you might not

* Shall, Should

- Shall we start the meeting?

Yes, we shall / No, we shan't.

NOTA.- SHAN'T = Shall + Not

Should I go to the dentist?

Yes, you should / No, you shouldn't

* Would

- Would you speak slowly, please?

Yes, I would / No, I wouldn't

* Must

- Must I explain it again?

Yes, you must / No, you mustn't.

- Can you help me?

Yes, What can I do for you?

- Could you tell me the time please?

Yes, it's 10:30.

2.- WH-QUESTIONS

* What (Qué, Cuál)

- What is your name?

My name is ....

* Where (Dónde)

- Where do you live?

I live in/at .....

* When (Cuándo)

- When is your birthday?

My birthday is in/on .....

That man / It is my friend

* How many (Cuántos) (plural)

- How many students are there in your class?

There are 23 students in my class.

* How much (Cuánto) (singular o incontable)

- How much does it cost?

It costs 12 euros.

* How far (Cuán lejos)

It is / It's 2 km. far.

- How tall are you?

I am / I'm 1.67 metres tall.

* How long (Cuánto tiempo)

- How long have you been living here?

I have / I've been living here for 5 years.

* How often (Cuán frecuente)

- How often do you play football?

I play football once a week.

- Which car will you buy?

I will / I'll buy the red one.

a) SIMPLE PRESENT

- John is a doctor

Is john /he a doctor?

Yes, he is / No, he isn't.

- You are in a hurry

Are you in a hurry?

Yes, you are / No, you aren't.

NOTA.- La expresión "to be in a hurry" significa "estar apurad@" o "con prisa".

- Matt goes to school

Does Matt go to school?

Yes, he does / No, he doesn't.

- You live in London

Do you live in London?

Yes, you do / No you don't.

He, She, It - is

b) SIMPLE PAST

* Did

- I went to the cinema yesterday

Did you go to the cinema yesterday?

Yes, I did / No, I didn't.

Aquí utilizamos el verbo irregular GO.

- I played football last week.

Did you play football last week?

Yes, I did / No, I didn't.

* Was, Were

Se trata del verbo TO BE en pasado. Lo más fácil, es recordar que WERE trabaja en el pasado con los sujetos que en el presente trabajan con ARE (we, you, they). El resto, trabaja con WAS.

- James was at home last night.

Was James / he at home last night?

Yes, he was / No, he wasn't.

- The children were at the zoo yesterday.

Were the children / they at the zoo yesterday?

Yes, they were / No, they weren't.

c) PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

Para este tiempo verbal, es esencial saber conjugar el verbo TO BE.

- John is working now.

Is John / he working now?

Yes, he is / No, he isn't.

El movimiento está en el intercambio de posición de sujeto y verbo auxiliar (TO BE).

d) PAST CONTINUOUS

Es igual a la forma presente, salvo que el verbo TO BE se encuentra en pasado, WAS, WERE.

- Jane was dancing all night.

Was Jane / she dancing all night?

Yes, she was / No, she wasn't.

e) PRESENT PERFECT

- They have been to London twice.

Have they been to London twice?

Yes, they have / No, they haven't.

- Peter has studied languages since 2010.

Has Peter / he studied languages since 2010?

Yes he has / No, he hasn't.

- The record store had closed when I arrived.

Had the record store / it closed when you arrived?

Yes, it had / No, it hadn't.

g) PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

- She has been working all day.

Has she been working all day?

Yes, she has / No, she hasn't.

h) PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS

- It had been raining.

Had it been raining?

Yes, it had / No, it hadn't.

i) FUTURE SIMPLE (WILL)

- I will go to the football match tomorrow.

Will you go to the football match tomorrow?

Yes, I will / No, I won't.

NOTA.- WON'T = Will + Not

j) FUTURE SIMPLE (GOING TO)

Aquí reemplazamos WILL por GOING TO y colocamos el verbo TO BE delante por estar el auxiliar GO en gerundio.

- I am / I'm going to play tennis next saturday.

Are you going to play tennis next saturday?

Yes, I am / No, I am / I'm not.

k) FUTURE CONTINUOUS

Aquí las piezas fundamentales son WILL BE (No cambia con ningún sujeto)+ el verbo principal en gerundio.

- I will be loving you forever.

Will you be loving me forever?

Yes I will / No, I won't.

l) FUTURE PERFECT

En este tiempo verbal, podríamos traducir WILL HAVE como (p.e.) "habrá", "habré", "habrán", "habremos". El verbo principal es en pretérito.

- Mr. Smith will have retired by the end of this year.

Will Mr. Smith have retired by the end of this year?

Yes, he will / No, he won't.

m) FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS

Ellos son WILL HAVE BEEN.

- Next month, I will have been teaching English for 10 years.

Will you have been teaching English for 10 years?

Yes I will / No, I won't.

- Is you English? (MAL)

Are you English? (BIEN)

- Do John play the guitar? (MAL)

Does John play the guitar? (BIEN)

- Have she studied last night? (MAL)

Has she studied last night? (BIEN)

b) Modal Verbs.- NO se utilizan correctamente (formal / informal) o se utilizan palabras alternativas.

- Is possible I help you? (MAL)

Can I help you? (BIEN)

- Mr. Brown, can you wait? (MAL) (RUDE)

Mr. Brown, could you wait, please? (BIEN) (POLITE)

- Have I go to the hospital? I'm bleeding. (MAL)

Must I go to the hospital? I'm bleeding. (BIEN)

- Do you can go? (MAL)

Can you go? (BIEN)

- Which is your name? (MAL)

What is your name? (BIEN)

- When is the meeting next week? (MAL)

Where is the meeting next week? (BIEN) o

When is the meeting? (BIEN)

- What are your name? (MAL)

What is / What's your name? (BIEN)

- Who is you? (MAL)

Who are you? (BIEN)

- What this is? (MAL)

What is this? (BIEN)

- What you do? (MAL)

What do you do? (BIEN)

- Is Mr. Brown travel? (MAL)

Is Mr. Brown travelling? (BIEN) (Present Continuous)

-Did you went to the cinema yesterday? (MAL)

Did you go to the cinema yesterday? (BIEN)

- Have you studied in London last year? (MAL)

Did you study in London last year? (BIEN) (Simple Past)

5.- CONSEJOS

Los principales son : TO BE, HAVE y DO - DOES.

B) There may be TEN planets in our solar system.
Indica la cantidad de planetas.

C) He gave her THAT hat over there.
Indica cuál sombrero en concreto.

ADJETIVOS DEMOSTRATIVOS

Ellos son : WHICH, WHAT, THIS, THESE, THAT y THOSE.

Ejemplos :

Indica la distancia entre los elementos = THIS, THAT.

ADJETIVOS INDEFINIDOS

a - an, the, few, many, every, each, both, several, some, any, most, one.

ADJETIVOS PREDICATIVOS

Son los que complementan algunos verbos como : feel, become, seem, get, is, look y smell.

Ejemplos :

A) Después del verbo TO BE.
Ej: The book is VERY interesting

B) Antes del SUSTANTIVO.
Ej: It's an INTERESTING book.

FORMACIÓN DEL COMPARATIVO Y SUPERLATIVO

FORMA COMPARATIVA

Ejemplo : Hot - Hotter

5) Tras el ADJETIVO siempre viene la palabra THAN.
Ejemplo : Thailand is bigger THAN Britain.

Ejemplo : Tina is MORE intelligent than Jane.
This car is LESS expensive than the other one.

FORMA SUPERLATIVA

Ejemplo : James is THE tallest pupil in the classroom.

6) En ADJETIVOS de más de 1 sílaba, además de la palabra THE , se agrega la palabra MOST. En algunos casos se utiliza también LEAST.
Ejemplo : It's difficult to know, who the MOST intelligent person in the world is.
Dean is not the LEAST smart person in this world.

NOTA IMPORTANTE

Ejemplos :

*Good - Better - Best

*Bad - Worse - Worst

*Many - More - Most
