Un tema que a veces pasa desapercibido es el vocabulario de los insectos.
En este artículo, enumeramos y describimos (en inglés) algunos de los más comunes.
1.- Definición de "Insect"
El diccionario Oxford lo define como: "Any small creature with six legs and a body divided into three parts".
Mientras que el diccionario Cambridge agrega en su definición informal: "Any small invertebrate animal, especially one with several pairs of legs".
2.- Wingless Insects
- Ant (Hormiga) = A small insect that lives in highly organized groups.
- Caterpillar (Oruga) = A small long animal with many legs that feeds on the leaves of plants and develops into a butterfly or moth.
- Flea (Pulga) = A very small jumping insect, that bites animals and humans and sucks their blood.
- Mite (Ácaro) = A very small creature like a spider that lives on plants, animals, carpets, etc.
- Snail (Caracol) = A small soft creature with a hard round shell on its back, that moves very slowly and often eats garden plants. Some types of snail can be eaten.
- Spider (Araña) = A smal creature with 8 thin legs. Many spiders spin webs to catch insects for food.
- Tick (Garrapata) = A small insect that bites humans and animals and sucks their blood.
- Worm (Gusano) = A long thin creature with no bones or legs, that lives in soil.
3.- Insects with wings
- Bee (Abeja) = A black and yellow flying insect that can sting. Bees live in large groups and make honey.
- Beetle (Escarabajo) = An insect with a hard shell-like back. Some types of beetles can fly.
- Butterfly (Mariposa) = A flying insect with a long thin body and four large usually brightly coloured wings.
- Cockroach (Cucaracha) = A flat brown or black insect sometimes found in the home.
- Cricket (Grillo) = A small brown jumping insect that makes a loud high sound by rubbing its wings together.
- Fly ( Mosca) = A small flying insect with 2 wings. There are many different types of fly.
- Grasshopper (Saltamontes) = A large insect with long back legs that can jump very high and makes a sharp high noise using its back legs or wings.
- Ladybird/Ladybug (Mariquita) = A small red beetle that is round and has black spots.
- Locust (Langosta) = A large insect that lives in hot countries and flies in large groups destroying all the plants and crops of an area.
- Mosquito = A flying insect that bites humans and animals and sucks their blood.
- Moth (Polilla) = A flying insect similar to a butterfly. Moths are attracted to bright lights.
- Praying Mantis (Mantis Religiosa) = A large green insect that holds its front legs in a way that makes it look as if it is praying when it is waiting to catch another insect.
- Termite (Termita) = A small tropical insect that eats wood.
- Wasp (Avispa) = A black and yellow insect that can sting.
