MATTER

1.- Definición

Como verbo su significado es "importar (a alguien)" y como sustantivo equivale a "asunto", "tema" o "materia".

2.- Verbo

Se suele utilizar en frases como:

- It doesn't matter. = Esto no importa.

- Does it matter? = ¿Importa esto?

- It matters to me. = Esto me importa a mí.

3.- Sustantivo

Existen un par de frases muy útiles que llevan "matter" como sustantivo.

- What's the matter?

En este caso su equivalente en nuestro idioma sería "¿Qué sucede / pasa?. También podemos usar "What's wrong?".

- As a matter of fact

Significa "A decir verdad", "En realidad".

Otras frases:

- This is a matter for the police. = Este es un asunto para la policía.

- There weren't important matters to discuss in the meeting. = No habían asuntos importantes que tratar en la reunión.

- It's only / just a matter of time. = Sólo es cuestión de tiempo.

4.- No Matter

Se trata de la versión corta de "It doesn't matter". Suele ir acompañada de una Wh-Question, pero con diferente función.

- No matter what you say, I believe you.

- No matter where it is, I will find it.

- John will do it, no matter how.

5.- Más Frases

- The heart of the matter. = El meollo del asunto, La raíz del problema.

- A matter of life and death. = Asunto de vida o muerte.

- Take matters into your own hands. = Decidir obrar por cuenta propia.

- For that matter = En realidad.

SEXIEST LANGUAGE

1.- Definición

Es el lenguaje que excluye a un género del otro o que sugiere que un género es mejor o superior que otro. Es mejor evitar este tipo de lenguaje para evitar ofender a alguien.

2.- Uso de Pronombres He, She, His, Her, Him, Hers

Tanto en la forma escrita como hablada, a menudo se usa para distinguir. Pero podría resultar ofensivo en algunos casos. Por ello, se debería utilizar "They" o "Their" cuando sea posible.

- Every student must show their ID before entering the examination room.

(En lugar de his/her.)

- A nurse has to be nice. They must connect with their patients.

(En lugar de she/her o he/his.)

3.- Sufijos -man, -master. -woman, -ess

Algunas personas encuentran sexista el uso de estos sufijos. Pero existen palabras alternativas.

- Fireman (-man) / Fire-fighter (Neutro)

- Headmaster (-master), Headmistress (-mistress) / Head (Neutro)

- Actor / Actress (-or, -ess) / Actor (Neutro)

4.- Man- como Prefijo

Algunos adjetivos, sustantivos y verbos incluyen "Man-" como prefijo. Pero también hay otras palabras que se pueden utilizar.

- Manpower (Man-) / Staff, Human Resources, Personnel, Workers.

- Manmade (Man-) / Artificial, Synthetic.

- Man (Verbo) / Staff, Attend to (Atender, dotar de personal, manejar).

5.- Man o Mankind

Para algunas personas sigue sonando sexista utilizar ambas palabras. Es así que prefieren el término Human being o Human beings en su lugar.

- Human beings first emerged in Africa.

- Human beings / Mankind has always dreamt of happiness.
