Hace unas semanas dedicamos este espacio a las 100 palabras más comunes o utilizadas en inglés.
En esta ocasión, nos centraremos en los 25 sustantivos más utilizados.
Para una mejor comprensión, los hemos dividido.
I.- Los relacionados con personas.
Person = Persona
El plural es "People".
Man = Hombre
El plural es "Men"
Woman = Mujer
En este caso además de cambiar la vocal (women), también cambiamos la pronunciación (uímen), en el plural.
Life = Vida
Suele confundirse tanto en escritura como en pronunciación con el verbo "live"
Child = Niño
El plural es "Children". Nótese que va SIN "S" al final. Esto es porque se trata de un sustantivo irregular.
Eye = Ojo
Se pronuncia igual que el pronombre "I".
Hand = Mano

II.- Los relacionados con el tiempo
Time = Tiempo, hora, vez
No sólo se utiliza para preguntar la hora. También se utiliza para:
a) Frecuencia
I go to the cinema 3 times a month. = Voy al cine 3 veces al mes.
b) Momento
Once upon a time ... = Hace mucho tiempo (En castellano es "Había una vez...")
Day = Día
Todos los días de la semana también acaban con ésta palabra.
Week = Semana
Para los fines de semana utilizamos "weekend".
Year = Año
Su pronunciación debe ser con la "Y" pero suave, "íiar"

III.- Los relacionados a lugares
World = Mundo
No confundir al planeta tierra ("Earth"), con la tierra o suelo "ground"
Place = Lugar
A menudo se utiliza también la palabra "room", para indicar espacio o lugar.
There's no room in my wardrobe = No hay lugar en mi armario/ropero.
Way = Camino, forma, manera
This is the way to the city centre. = Este es el camino hacia el centro de la ciudad.
I don't think it is the best way to do it. = No creo que esta sea la mejor forma de hacerlo.
No way! (colloquial) = De ninguna manera!, No me digas! (Coloquial)
Point = Punto
A menudo se utiliza la siguiente expresión en lugar de "Why?"
What's the point?

IV.- Los relacionados con el trabajo
Work = Trabajo
Es además de un sustantivo, también un verbo. De ahí que se confunda con "job".
I'm at work = Estoy en el trabajo.
Where do you work? = ¿Dónde trabajas?
I'm a doctor. That's my job. = Soy un doctor. Ese es mi trabajo.
You did a good job! = Has hecho un buen trabajo!
Company = Compañía
Nota.- No sólo se relaciona esta palabra con un lugar de trabajo o negocios, sino también con la reunión de dos o más personas.
The company name is ... = El nombre de la compañía/empresa es ...
Two's company = Dos son compañía.
You are in good company = Está en buena compañía.

V.- Varios
Government = Gobierno
Group = Grupo
Number = Número
Thing = Cosa
A menudo se utiliza "stuff" como plural en lugar de "things". Ambas son correctas.
Part = Parte
No sólo se refiere a una parte o sección de algo o alguien, sino también a un lugar.
Case = Caso, situación
También se utiliza "situation" (situéishon)
Problem = Problema
Para preguntar por el problema o acontecimiento, utilizamos:
What's the problem?
What's wrong?
Fact = Hecho verdadero o real
Esta palabra se suele encontrar en las revistas o artículos acerca de personas famosas, en las que se detallan sus datos y vida pasada.
